hi guys, I'm from Singapore and I really hope that the tutorial comes soon. I'm trying real hard to push locking here as well. Altho there are a lot of irritating dancers that just simply mix locking steps with hip hop which irritates the hell out of me~!!

I hope to start a true blue locking crew here.. (as well as popping) and show what funkstyles are all about~

Anyhow, ya think you can explain what is the Bus stop? and Volkswagon? haha...

Our body is the form.
The heart is the rhythm.
The floor is our stage.

Check this out, pretty intersting, i didnt know this!!! - 06-04-2005, 02:01 PM

Do Locking movements have meaning, why do I search for this meaning, and why wasn’t this told earlier ?

Quote: The Original Skeeter Rabbit
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes many of the movements have meaning and to do these movements with funk and soul I believe it is important to understand these, (note the website home page)the picture on the front was selected because locking (along with soul train) became part the turning point at the end of the 1960s in the Afro American communities. Many people do not understand this culture. it is not taught in schools. it also has been altered or changed just like Locking. The Lockers Handshakes are very significant they became the ultimate symbol of unity and brotherhood .Locking became a celebration a party dance The movement which starts most locking steps The hit or the muscle man is a greeting which announces other movements. The points are an acknowledgement of appreciation. The same with receiving five , we often gave ourselves five as a self acknowledgement. We no longer needed approval from society, The skeeterRabbit became an accidental tribute to the unity of the Nicholas Brothers . It was a variation of a tap dance shuffle ending, I would either continue the movement or pause it in the middle of doing the Scooby doo, There were synchronized moves like the seek and the keepa runnin which were symbolic of being alert in the inner city ghettos . Many dancers of all ethnic backgrounds can or seek to identify with the struggle and celebration and are carrying on the symbolic movements. Others are just dancing. When John Travolta was taught by Denni Terrio ( who was not from the evolutonary period) He attempted to do locking movements and pointed in the air with no purpose. Many took it as a great new dance move, some who knew the history took it as a mockery a non acknowledgement. But again the teacher capitalized, got paid and Tavolta probably never learned there was a background. and now thats an important part of dance history.

There are two reason why this has not been taught. There is no one person who created it all or intentionally sat down and planned the sub culture or what it would mean or develop to be to society. also two out of the seven messengers ,(I mean Lockers), where not from the culture of the evolution stage. They were from on the edge of the marketing stage, they were self ambitious from the beginning, The others eventually recognized this and also began to pursued the commercial aspects of the entertainment world forgetting about the roots. This broke up the foundation of brotherhood. But when you are very young and the way you portray the history and take credit can affect your career. How would you answer the questions ?

I believe we the OGs must also admit our mistakes and some us are, but even today some dancers are still telling the story that would best benefit themselves.

Interesting huh! 4real im not gonna battle lock nemore, lol, although thats rare i even find another locking to lock with, apart from my crew members that lock. Although one could have guessed that Locking isnt really a battle dance as to say. Eg: Poppers...generally get into their zone and do their thing, and really I myself as a popper knows that not many poppers smile or make "friendly" faces etc. Whereas the Lockers are the opposite, "Happy, funny, friendly" mannerisms, it seems to do it, and suites the dance. I always get my character goin, and faces, emotion etc. Whereas when i pop i try sometimes to do the expressions, and for some reason it just doesnt really go together. Now we may know why! Im out.
Peace.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with the first point, bu definitely, locking has a more friendly atmosphere to it.

See, I don't consider popping a "battle-dance" either...and when I pop, often times I do it to entertain those around me, so I do make faces and humorous gestures (Like my friends often times joke about me having sex like a robot for one reason or another...so I do robotic pelvic thrusts while making a face like I'm getting off...hahaha...that one's classic).

But definitely.

Check out my first audio freestyle, and second audio.... Drop some feed, I'm still learnin'!

I've been locking for 3 months now, and i've got to say in amount of fun, it rivals popping. I love locking, though i may not have much move vocabulary or skill for that matter, I really feel the music and feel a rush when locking. It's good to see this forums up, it'll help people like me get a lot better.

I am the Uh Oh Oreo.

White on the outside, brown on the inside.

Welcome desipop, yeah man my tutorial of the basics come soon. real soon, i just been busy as hell. But yeah man i been locking for 2 years now, and man i love it. LOL my vocab aint huge, but i do my own variations of all the already made moves, eg i got my own very unique version of the stop'n'go, skeeter rabbit and the lock etc. But yeah just keep goin, try walking and moving around a decently sized area while doin ya moves, then incorporate funky sorta disco "old skool disco" moves to ya locking, remember locking is really a free-form of funk style, whereas popping has the hitting on the beat, the locking can be done differently eg no "locking" on beat, more movement of the body and then lock. LOL soz if this sounds very confusing, if it is dont worry it'll become clear in the tutorial. Newayz fellow Lockers im out. Peace.

hmm ok a couple things
first off
moves arent everything...you dont need to have a large move vocabulary to be a good locker
don started it off with the LOCK thats all he had....when he felt funky hed give himself five, slap the ground or jump into the splits....when a girl was laughing at him he pointed to her and it made a reaction hence the origin of the "point" or "uncle sam points" as people call them...

secondly make use of all your space
a lot of people practice locking in front of the mirror..that is ok to see how to further develop your lock...but locking is a 3d dance..you get down in a circle so make use of the entire area around you....look around, etc

thirdly as for music.....you still need to be in the music as much as any popper has to be....if not more so
you have to dissect each song you hear and listen for different instruments....horns, drums, guitar, vocals they all combine to give different levels of a song...you may not have to be on beat to the drum for a whole song but you still have to be in tune with the music....it has to become a part of you as if you are showing physically what the music portrays auditorily

dont get me wrong its important to learn all the older steps
but dont get discouraged if you dont learn them all
a lot of the moves were created by the individual dancers and not everyone could perform them the same way
each locker is unique
