Locking to current/new music - suggestions? - 09-13-2008, 03:10 AM

Despite my fear that I might get verbally smacked around for posting this, I'm posting it in the hopes someone can help.

I understand that locking is typically done to funk music. I really do understand that. But I've borrowed a ton of CDs from friends and listened to well over 200 old-style funk tracks (many of which I've seen listed in the "suggested music" threads in this forum) and, well, they just don't do anything for me. There's nothing wrong with them, I just don't enjoy them enough to want to hear them repeatedly while practicing. In short, old-style funk doesn't _move_ me. It's just a personal taste thing.

So I was hoping that maybe some people here could recommend current/modern type music that they practice with. I've gone through every music thread in this forum and the only references to modern music that I've seen were Daft Punk's "Da Funk" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", and "almost any Jamiroquai song". (Heh. For some reason I find that amusing. I'm not sure why.) Does anyone have any other suggestions?

That's so funny, I actually have the Swizz Beats one (an instrumental version) on my popping playlist and it didn't even occur to me that it might cross over well! As for the others - yay!! I really appreciate the suggestions and will listen to them all today. <3 Thank you!

There are a few old-school tracks that I like, although I think all of those are because I fell in love with remixes that were done later. For example, I like George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" because it makes me think of the Snoop Dog track (which I loved when I was a teenager). And I like Lakeside's "Fantastic Voyage" because I loved Coolio's version of the song.

Maybe I should just be looking for more-recent remixes of the original funk songs, LOL!

I like Trick Daddy feat Trina - Slip N Slide a lot too, although I like Trina's part of the song better just because I dig her.

I liked a lot of those! The Busta Rhymes one, Kevin Rudolf, Canon in D (bboy), Pitbull, and the first Justice track are all on my list now.

I don't think those are very good songs for locking.. Swizz Beats song is way too slow to dance to. That's all I'll say for now, I'll see if any other lockers reply to this.

Having had a few days now to work on it, I find that most of them are pretty good for where I'm at right now (newbie), because I have to do the movements somewhat slow to make sure they're tight. Once I start speeding them up they tend to get sloppy, so I'd rather get them ingrained properly into muscle memory and then work on speeding them up. I don't want sloppy movements.

The Swizz Beats one I'm still finding a lot easier for popping, so I'd left it just on my popping playlist. But I've found that the Kevin Rudolf and Busta Rhymes ones are working pretty well for me so far. And a number of Lil Mama tracks too, LOL. (This is funny because getting into locking is drastically changing my musical tastes - normally I'm a Tool/Puscifer/Marilyn Manson/The Birthday Massacre kind of chick. There has even been some locking being done around my house to Manson's "Doll Dagga-Buzz-Buzz Ziggety-Zag", LOL. But yeah, listening to stuff like Lil Mama is quite new for me and I find it funny because it's SO different.)

The funk doesn't move you? The funk should move everyone.

I don't practice with any music other than funk, and occasionally, when there's no other music, breakbeats. But the mainstream current music you're talking about in general is way too slow for locking to be done to it.

I don't object to you using it for practice, but there's funk tracks just as slow that you could use to practice to. Also there's things in funk music that you just can't find in mainstream hiphop, like the trumpet, the guitar, the bass. It would look silly if you tried to do the funky guitar to a segment of rap, because that doesn't make sense to the music.

If this doesn't move you, give up on the funkstyles in general.

I'll just start off by saying the majority rappers today have no intention of supporting hip-hop culture. If you don't support the culture, then you aren't really hip-hop.

I don't care what anyone else says, but generally speaking you should be able to lock to all types of music.

Read the rules before you post, please.

I won't dispute that Wavedash, and I agree with you to a point, but, in my humble opinion, funk is the roots. That's where it's at.

lol, I never said anything about where it came from.

But if you want to be really specific, locking started with soul music, which is a little different than funk. It's all close enough to be together, but it's all different at the same time.

Read the rules before you post, please.

Haha, fine. You win. What modern songs do you dance to? I might try it out.
