Definitely will do. And I think that after a couple weeks of listening to a great deal of funk music my ear is starting to develop a bit, because yesterday while running errands I had my iPod on shuffle and I _didn't_ find myself skipping the funk tracks like I would have before! So progress is being made.

So I suppose in a few more weeks I'll have to listen to all the tracks I panned the first time to see if I like any of them now, LOL. It's kind of like William Faulkner, I didn't like his writing style until I picked up the right book (Intruder in the Dust FTW!) and then after that I developed a taste for his writing.

Fishbelly, I've been trying to find some current music to lock to as well, and I can definitely relate on the notion of not really feeling some of the older songs. The classics like Flashlight are always gonna be solid choices for lockin, but for the last year or so I've been keeping an ear out for new funk. Here's some I think would be good to try out, which will probably upset some hardcore old-schoolers but whatever.

Kraak & Smaak - Squeeze Me

Estelle - American Boy

Kenna ft Lupe Fiasco - Say Goodbye To Love remix

Marlena Shaw - California Soul (Diplo / Mad Decent remix)

I've found Junior Senior to have some pretty funky stuff, but they don't have a lot of music videos of their own. For better or worse, here's youtube videos of my faves.

Hip Hop a Lula

Itch U Can't Skratch

Move Your Feet

And I totally agree that Jamiroquai makes EXCELLENT locking music. "Soul Education", "Starchild", and "Time Won't Wait" are a few you should check if you haven't already.

I wouldn't call those new funk. Actually to be honest I've never heard the term. But sounds more like R&Bish to me.

Jamiroquai has a nice sound to it though.

I'd say newer songs or styles of music to pop or lock to (works well for both) would be a genre called "Nujazz" i play it every day at work cuz its one of the better stations and im alone 80% of the time. and i cant help but pop to the tracks they play. it jams hard. enjoy

currently have :

B-boying: Footwork, Nice ass transistions, some power...

poppin: Hitting, boogaloo, waves, tuts, glides, fresno, robotic/toying.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say there is an established genre called "new funk", I just meant I like looking for new songs that have a good funk goin. Also, isn't Rhythm&Blues part of the same vein? The genre was actually popularly called Soul before the R&B term. It shouldn't be too awkward to assume that some songs in R&B have strong influences from the likes of James Brown, Earth Wind & Fire, and the many other stars who helped establish the sound of funk.

In the case of the songs I posted, their strong beat and smooth groove give off a vibe I can't help but lock to!

I don't believe so. I think soul and R&B were different things. There was old school R&B, funk, and soul. I wouldn't classify any of them in the same genre.

heh, i found myself at a lounge the other night and they only played music. It took some getting used to but locking to house music is pretty fun. also we just used this song for a performance and its pretty fun to lock to as well.

These are the song I found last year, really great to lock to. I don't really listen to Madcon but you guys can go and listen to their other music like "Liar" by Madcon also works but I'm not sure, but the songs below I'm pretty precise its funky!

I'm learning myself so I can't tell you I lock to this stuff, but if I could, I would:

KMFDM megalomaniac * Korn make me bad * MSTRKRFT D.A.N.C.E. remix

Those aren't new by any means, especially KMFDM, but it kind of gives you an idea of different styles of music. KMFDM and Front 242 usually still have cred in the industrial scene just like the Misfits and Ramones do in the punk scene.

I'm older myself and I've always had a hybrid of tastes. I liked Ministry and White Zombie but I loved hip hop culture with the ADIDAS!! the graffiti, the breakin' (before it was popular to be that way) so when I first saw Jonathan Davis in the BLIND video I saw a marriage between the two things that hypnotized me the most - he dressed like a bboy but his eyebrow was pierced before people really did that, he had dreads, and played heavy music so they're definately a band I'd love to break to.
