My kip-up on my bed - 11-07-2003, 03:40 AM

http://www.bboy.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=13147

I just uploaded a video of one of my first kip-ups. My bed turned out to be a good place to learn. I find that in order to get up I have to really kick hard, making sure that I kick in a diagonal direction. So for anyone just getting started my video should give you an idea of some of the basics. Now I just have to get the courage to try one on my rock hard floor.

If anyone has tips for me I would be happy to hear them.

I suck and I know I suck so be gentle.

I can already see your problem, dude. Your hands are all fine, but your legs are doing it wrong. First al all, your should kick MUCH harder, as hard as your possibly can. Secondly, y r u bending your legs? When your kick straighten them to max, then your kip-ups will look much phatter. Hope that helps.

I can hardly do one. You think I know why its named that? I could make something up. Here goes.

It was popularized by patricidal breaker Kip Kinkle, before which it was known as the Kick Up.

Actually a kip up is also known as a Chinese Getup. It was invented by the Chinese Kung-Fu fighters. I heard that a Chinese dude invented it by trying to do a flip from ground or something, but f**ked up and landed on his legs. Since then it became a popular fighting type of move, which also passed onto Breakdance.

he has a point, anyone can kip up on a bed, the springs etc give u so much extra leverage, atleast try it on the grass, or some other soft surface that is not going to assist you.

You're right.
I can do kipups on a bed easily now but not on the ground. Unfortunately, I havn't practiced lately, so I havn't gotten it on the ground yet, but doing it on the bed helped me get started. At first I couldn't even do it on the bed. It was just to get me started.

I used to do them on my bed too, but when it comes to the floor it's totally different, because the bed gives you an extra boost that you won't have on a hard surface, so don't get used too much to that mattress and go practice on the floor!!!!!!!!

Cus what you say is what you say,
say what you say how you say it
whenever you sayin' it,
just remember how you said it
when you was sprayin' it,
so who you playin' with,
huh???

Cheers.
Currently, I'm very good with kip ups.
The trick is kickin' hard with your legs in a diagonal way. Nowadays I can kick 'em vertically, wich I think is more stylish and allows ya to nearly land where ya back were layed down.

I think the bed isn't very good to start really, 'cause it'll do half the work for ya. That's not good, 'cause you'll have an higher odd of failing while doing it on the floor.
If ya are afraid of doing it on hard floor, do like I did when I first started: flat beach sand is great to train kip ups. Once you managed it there, you'll do it wherever ya want with great style, jumpin' high, since you won't have the sand burieing your back.

I actually learned alot of tricks on the beach. Flips and jumpi'n stuff...and your training while breathing some fresh hair and watching the sea, it's awesome.
