Ok, here's a quick guide on...

How To Jump Into Lotus:

A prerequisite for this move is at least the ability to get into lotus semi-comfortably. Get lotus down good and this will soon follow. This move can be done after an apple back, any handstand move (an invert, a hollowback), or any move where your legs have enough freedom to kick into lotus position. Use your imagination.

I recommend stretching alittle first. Warm up a bit--you don't want to injure yourself if your muscles aren't loosened up enough to handle the quick stretch movement.

1. Now, the way you start is by kicking real swift into half lotus. I kick my right leg in this step because my right leg is my stronger/dominant leg. (Note: Your other leg hops HARD after this, and in this split second moment, your butt should be in the air)

2. You should be in half lotus mid-air at this instance of time. Use your hips and your abs to keep you airborne, while using your hands for support. The main part of this step is this: You NEED to press/stretch down HARD on the knee of the leg you just kicked into half lotus (the bent leg) towards the ground, while keeping your ankle locked over the thigh, in order to fit your second leg over it.

3. Immediately or almost simultaneously, like another split second after, kick your other foot as hard and as high as you can, kicking OVER the opposite leg's knee, aiming for your groin area.

Good stretches to prepare you to kick into lotus are the butterfly stretches (where you put your feet together and try to push your chest down to where your feet are), half lotus, toe touch variations (try and go deep and palm the floor, while keeping your legs *not* completely straight, because you DON'T want to hyperextent and pull your leg muscles, but very slightly bent straight), and split variations.

nice guide but im still having trouble. i jump off with my right leg i can get my left leg into the right spot but i cant get my right leg over my left leg, should i stretch some more or just keep trying?

Ahh, i thought this was a guide on howto l-kick into lotus or something haha. I think this move is pretty easy, i haven' really tried kicking into it. But I can hold myself up and get into it pretty easy, and run around in it a bit haha. I think the best practice for this is just practicing holding yourself up with your legs straight in front of you go work your abs/arms. Once you do that enough, and you're flexible enough to get into lotus without hands, it should come easy.

Well, first answer this question for yourself: When you normally get into lotus from sitting (just a regular lotus--getting into it with your hands), what leg do you lift and put into "the right spot" first?

-If your answer is your right leg, then you should jump off with your left leg instead, and then try getting that left leg over your right leg, which is the opposite of what you are doing.

-If your answer is your left leg, then you are doing it the right way However, since your attempts have been unsuccessful, I'd do both: stretch some more and keep trying! If it still hurts to get into lotus, you need to keep practicing basic lotus until it doesn't hurt too much (or doesn't hurt at all). Once you've reached this point, there should be nothin stopping you from practicing until you can kick into lotus. Hope this helps.

since no one will actually explain what a lotus looks like, it's like sitting with your legs crossed, but you lock them in so that they can stay in place. that way you can keep them crossed in the air... kinda like the crazy asian guys you always see doing eclipses and flairs in them.
