Well dis is how i look at it! I see bboyin as more of a culture den jus a dance ya know?? If ur a bboy ur part of a culture...a culture within da hip hop culture! Breakdancin...while its a different name fo' da same kind of dance, i dont really consider it a culture! I see breakdancin as jus da DANCE part! Even den, sometimes breakdancers leave out toprocks n' dat kind of stuff! So breakdancin is more of a recreational way of doin it i guess...wit less guidelines! Bboyin is more serious, more of a culture! To be a bboy, u cant leave out a toprock n' do 20 flares, or do a bunch of windmills n' NO footwork....it jus dont work!

I'm PERSONALLY jus gettin into bboyin (only been doin it a few weeks really), but i dont call maself a bboy! I tell ppl im gettin into breakdancin, becuz i feel bboyin is a culture in itself...n' i aint really a PART of dat culture yet, i jus like da dance. I dont wanna disrespect da culture by callin maself a bboy when i dont really kno da history of da dance n' stuff like dat ya kno?? But dats my take on it...im jus gettin into it tho! Peace n' Love yall!

I know alot of serious bboys and we all really look at it the same way. You can play sports and not be an athlete, but if playing sports and seriously improving your game are a major part of who you are you're an athlete. Break dancing is the move. But if you're serious about it, if it's your identity and who you are, than you're a BBoy. Participating in the culture is bboying.

I know it's big right now to knock "Break Dancing" as a media term but it's not a bad term, we closely ride the BREAK beat when we dance (or you should if you don't). In the 70's when bboying came out it was slang to say "why you breakin' on me" as in, why are you flipping out? and BBoying is all about intensity and explosive style so that works. BBoying is definitely the name for the culture and artform, but I don't think break dancing is a bad name for the basic moves. Just my opinion, Respect - GRIZ

I'm BBoy GRIZ, I love BBoy Videos, BBoying, House, Sports, Making Beats, Spreading Hip Hop Culture, my Girlfriend Sarah, I live in the Steel City, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Peace!

odd these dudes are from california considering that the "hip hop" culture came from New York. Its the same shit that has been going on for years between NY and California. It hasn't been long enough for our history to be so easily manipulated has it???? Cali might have invented locking or popping or whatever, but it doesnt change the fact that the cultural movement started in Bronx. And nevermind flashdance, there was a show in the 70's called Real People that had a breakdance crew as guests way before that movie ever came around. I am wondering when the folks from out west are going to do a study that says Bonbing trains and graff style all started out that way because mexicans from centuries ago wrote on walls. Choose your history, but choose it wisely, maybe even by doing your own research

Honestly...i dont care if someone called it crapdancing...its just a word....and if it was called crapdancing it wouldnt make me not want to do it....I like to bboy, break or whatever...its just something i like to do. people shouldnt make such a big deal out of it being called breakdancing or bboying...just as long as the person really likes to do it then whats the problem...if you really like to play basketball but then people started calling it roundball or something would it really matter..you would still like to do it..anyways im done ^_^

There has never been and is no actual dance style or dance form called "breaking" or "Break dancing". The word "break" was created by the O.G. Dance Group Chain Reaction in 1974 to describe a move in the dance form called "Locking". This move is where the arms are bent sharply at the elbows or a "Break" at the elbows.
Actually, what Guzman-Sanchez describes here is a move called 'the lock' invented by Don Campbell, and which Guzman-Sanchez and the rest of Chain Reaction copied, and renamed as 'break' (according to Underground Dance Masters, his crew thought a strong point was what a 'lock' was). So if Guzman-Sanchez wants to diss anyone for using the wrong terminology, he should start with himself.

He also rather conveniently sidesteps the fact that in the 1980s he was in the episode of Fame called 'Break Dance!' so if he wants to attack the people most responsible for perpetuating and popularizing the term 'breakdance', again he should start with himself.

I actually think 'breakdance' is a pretty good tag for the dance. Bboying is a bit too gender-specific and calling it 'bboying and bgirling' is a bit long-winded. Just because something is the original term doesn't mean that's the only term it can be called e.g. you wouldn't tell anyone off for calling it 'television' rather than 'moving pictures by wireless' (the original term) or say we can't use the word 'internet' and have to call it by its ancient names 'ARPAnet' or 'the information superhighway'!!

So yeah, call it bboying, bgirling or breakdancing. All should be fine and seen as valid.

(Just don't call something that is universally known in dance as 'the lock' as 'the break'! It's one thing to create a new name for something that has already has a name, but if no-one else in the world uses that new name, you should really give it up!)

I always thought that calling someone a "breakdancer" instantly meant that you weren't one, as the more proper term would be "bboy/bgirl"...

As far as im concered. In todays society there is no such thing as the bboy any more its a dying breed.
Allthough it doesnt bother me because i inspire to teach as many cats as i school on the floor whats the deal. But i will never inforce, you call my downrocks whack because they aint flares so be it.
But there is no need to get angry of this which i notice a fair few people do.
As for "bboy/girl" and "break dancer" they are two terms used very loosley so going to legs for a schooling hed prolly flip it 10 fold and school you on equality, society and change.

So in other words a personal line must be drawn. What is YOUR boundary for bboy and brakedance. because you cannot gotto a battle any more and just get down things havew evolved, There is allways the foundation but there is also many years of style developement which may consist of these dynamic moves that dont exaist in the golden days of hip hop.

And the kool herc thing he says he callewd them bboys, break boys because they would only dance to the break of a record

I agree.

Words and labels are stupid and they don't mean a thing. They evolve over time. Breaking dancing and bboying mean the exact same thing. It doesn't matter what they may have meant 20 years ago at this point, the fact is that whether you like it or not they are both synonymous.
It's kinda like dodge ball vs war ball. Who cares! They're both the same thing, and they both represent freaking awesome things.

I think people get too caught up with semantics and useless politics that they loose sight of just doing the dang thing. To get upset over labels is pointless. It's as stupid as getting upset because somebody calls you black instead of African American.

On a side note, I just wish the word "bboying" flowed out of the mouth easier than the word "break dancing" haha. Cause yeno, when you say "B-Boy" you have to say "B" and then reform your lips back to say "B" again, whereas with breakdance the syllables flow together. Ehh, oh well. I'm sure the extra effort is burning some calories.

Now whos right? Not even all OGs say the same thing..

Some say it comes from the break in funk tracks people used to dance to. "Breaking / Breakboys". And others OGs say its almost like the opposite I mean wtf.

Its just logic that there is a difference in terminology, where I live (Netherlands) I only have to take the buss or train to a different city or town and I notice huge difference in terminology. You already have these differences from people to people. Friends A Talk different then Friends B, having their own "style" of jokes and speech.

Iam just talking about -50KM Distance.

Now US, I dont know howmany times the Netherlands fits into the US so imagine the differences you have there.

There are no realy wrong or right terms.
Dont get me wrong, you will see me frown when they come up with "HipHop Dance"

I suck at writing, so if you dont get it.
Yall know that game where you sit in a circle and one tells a story or a word, and the next one tells it to his or her neighbour, until you're back at point one. You ever succeeded in that game with more then 20-30 people?
Same goes for Fairytales.

ciao

was watching style wars for like the 300th time the other day, would be interesting to know how no one caught that Rocksteady Crew themselves were calling it breakdancing long before the rest of the country caught on to the movement. And thats recorded history. Pretty hard to contest that i think
