Crunches for losing weight!? Don't make me laugh! -
06-14-2004, 06:51 AM
doing crunches?? any other workout than aerobic like running, cycling, stepping, skipping, rowing... Won't burn you enough cals to lose weight...
Look at what you eat... Just go with brown bread... Diet butter... White and red meats are good... leave the pork.. Tuna... Drink at least 2 liters of water a day! Leave the soda's... And do at least one of the above stated aerobic workouts... Your heartrate needs to be at atleast 50% if your max... 220 - age (is a good standard for your max without breaking a sweat) and need to be at this level or above for 20 min at least because after about 20 minutes you start to burn fats... Then the sugar reserves in muscles and organ will be depleted and the body will change to fats for energy... Need more advice PM me... Losing weight by lifting weights and doing resistance training is a myth total BS! It's nice to be bulky at the time you lost all your fat... But thats a whole different story!!
Main point: intake cals need to be lower then outtake!!

^ Good points in regards to the cardio, that is absolutely true. The fact is you need to be balanced in your work out routine. There are marathon runners who may seem fit but that could not be the case, since they are not balanced in their work-out routine (great cardiovascular system, but suffering from health concers like back and joint pain).
Basically you need a balanced approach.
Ultimately, you want to increase your % of lean body mass, decrease % body fat, increase strength, endurance, flexability, and improve the cardiovascular system.
Therefore you need a routine that includes: stretching, strengthening exercises and aerobic activity.
Do a program you are comfortable doing every day. Start slowly, maybe just a walking program.
So the routine is -
1. Warm up
-5 to 10 mins. Light movements like walking/stretching. Intended to increase muscle temp. Stretch slowly and smoothly
2. Building strength
-Avoid taking long breaks in your exercises. Move from one station to the next without taking long breaks. (I do circut training where for instance I would do 10 reps of arm curles, then 10 crunches, 10 curles, 10 crunches... not taking long rests between the exercises since you are using different muscle groups therefore you are maximize your workout)
-Do around 3/4 times a week, 20-30 mins. Research says in about 2 months you will gain 2-4 pounds of muscle and increase 40% in strength.
-Your metabolism is affected by the amount of lean mass you have. So more lean mass, greater metabolic responce, so greater amount of energy burned.
3. Aerobic
- After stengthening exercises move into this. 20 minutes at approx. 60-80% of max heart rate (like said before take 220 subtract from age and multiply by .6 and .8... this will give you your aerobic range)
-This willl help burn burn off excess body fat and ecourage a healthy cardiovascular system.
4. Cool down
- 5 minutes to cool down. Do some walking and repeat some stretches.
So there it is, a very complete and accurate work out routine that is most importantly... balanced.

When running don't just set a distance because that does nothing for you. Instead set a time. In losing fat your going to have to put in more than 20 minutes in a session because your body doesn't start to use up your fat cells until after 20 minutes of consistantly keeping your heart rate up. Also if you can do light weight training. Keep your reps up high. 20-30 reps per a set weight and you'll find fat disappearing and your muscles toning.
Watch what you eat. Like everyone else said, stay away from soda and stay with water. I drink almost 60oz a day my self. Don't over eat even if you have workout, your not really filling in anything. Most of the energy comsumed by food fuels keeping you alive and your body temperature up. Being active only uses 4-5% of what your body normal needs.
I recomend that you slowly progress up to a 45 minutes jog. Yeah it's going to be extremely tough. But once you get there you'll be happy. Play some sports, like basketball or wrestling and you'll see even more results.
Like I said for weight training, less pounds with more reps. Make sure though that you work your entire body and not just certain sections. Also don't use the same technique on each body part. Variety in routine is very important.

I lost 10 lbs in 6 days, I lost alot of fat, and gained alot of mussel,
Here is what you do...
1. Get 10 days worth of food.... Put it in a backpack, Get a sleepingbag, and a tent, all in the bag.
2. Drive up in to mountains.
3. Walk 10 miles a day, in under 4 hours up hill and down hill.
And bow-yeah...
This really made my neck/shoulders look really tight...
But it fucked up my knee's
I Wish my sister would shut the fuck up...

heres a little fat loosing secret, its called the cold. you get it and you only want to eat soup, and once you ate good for a week you are so damn tired of sitting on your ass you go out and do stuff. Go get one.
acually to maintain your current weight for me, just eat when your hungry. I eat meals, dont eat snacks. workout too, I think its easy to maintain your own weight, just eat when your body tells you to and not when your mind does.
