high or low reps - 09-06-2008, 11:57 AM

hi i've been working out for bboying and 3running aswell as i enjoy both sports.

However i've researched and asked people say to do low reps from 1-3 with heavy weights so that gives you pure strength and that's what gymnasts use.

But then on this forum a few guides say do 15 reps with normal-ish weights and the people i know say that it only improves your endurance.

which should i do? I want to improve holding my handstands and freezes...

^It's a valid question, no need to get smart on somebody.

Your body will benefit from both, in a way. You shouldn't be doing 1-3 reps of anything, that's garbage. The exercises that help you to optimize use of your muscles will be the high rep (20+) exercises with lower weight. The normal exercises that people use weights for will have moderate weight with about 10-20 reps. Heavy weight sets should be 5-10 reps. That will give you raw strength and help build muscle, but you should also be able to use your muscles efficiently. Your best bet is to balance both, but weightlifting isn't as efficient in bboying as it is to just use your bodyweight in exercises such as pushups or dips. If you're trying to do handstands, the best exercise is doing handstands. It's that simple. Just do what makes sense.

...Where you get your info from? "That's what gymnasts use."

Dude, think about it, gymnasts don't weightlift! They use bodyweight conditioning and calisthenics, duh.. that's common sense.

Tutorials

Building an Olympic Body through Bodyweight Conditioning: A Bodyweight Strength Training article from Dragon Door Publications

FightingArts.com Forums: Exercises without weights

These are good.. only if you REALLY think you need it, because you generally don't.
