Handstand Help -
10-20-2005, 10:46 PM
I'm trying to learn the hand stand, and no I'm not scared of fallin' and breakin' my ass or neck. BUT, when I go near a wall and pull up I can hold myself a shitload longer than jsut doing a normal one. Also, I was told you look forward and not at the ground. So with that said, anyway to get better without being near a wall, and no I'm not touching the wall, about half a foot from it. And where do you look?

One more thing, plz don't tell me I need to workout or do pushups and crap, I DO workout, maybe not all the muscles needed to hold a handstand longer like my core muscles, lower back, or shoulders which I target but not as much... So yea... other tips are always welcome

I'd say practice. We can't tell you how to balance your body. But some tips: try making a V with your legs, arched back, pushing with hands to keep balance. I'll get back to you when I think of more.

I'am a dance instrustor in Malaysia for three years. Here are some tips-u should never arch while doing hand stand.here is a way that will help.Do hand-stand while your abs/stomach facing the wall,at this possision do do push ups, while doing your stomach shouldn't touch the wall.this possision helps u straighten your body and is the right way of doing hand=stand.REmember your body should never arch

i could do it fairly naturally but to get it to a point where i could balance longer than ten seconds took about a month.
i practised in my room at first then outside on the grass
Be on your best behavior boys, i will only be gone a minute...

15-20 seconds is always a pretty good length of time. It took me about 2 months. The great thing about handstands though is its hard to loose the feel of them, so you can go out of practice for a month or two and you'll still have them. I practiced in my basement 3-4 days a week.

Thanks ... So I'm not retarded or not trying hard enough ... I've only been practicing for 7 days. When I do it, it feels like I will land on my back and I instrinctively put my hands forward, which makes my fall down. How can I stop this instinct, or is it just practice?

When you feel like your gonna fall, try walking out of a still position (meaning, put one hand forward, then the other to keep your balance). Land on your back a few times, or better yet, practice rolling out of your handstand. Other than that, its practice. Keep it up

Hmm... I rarely lock, if i'm trying to hold something, like a freeze or whatever, I lock. But I usually try not to.
