I was asking the same question when I was learning them. All your have to do is get your handstand balance perfect and practice hopping... Nothing much to say here.

It's ok. I'm a newbie(sort of) but can do a handstand for 6 sec if I'm lucky.

I agree with Break Master A. It will just take alot of practice on maintaining your balance and working on the hops.

Peace

Try this: (Works for some, not for others)

Kick your legs HARD.....I mean try to kick 'em straight up....as straight as you can. This'll keep your legs in an upright position, howver, it doesn't work for some people....give it a shot. Works for me, but I can hold a handstand for like 30s, so I dunno. Try it out.

Peace.

I must've been hammered when I wrote that or something.....doesn't make much sense, so here's a more "physic"...y way of putting it.

What you want, is to keep the net horizontal force in your legs at around 0, and have your net vertical force be greater than gravity (Your weight x G (G = 9.8)). For normal hops, your net horizontal force will equal zero if you kick your legs straight up....the farther from 90 degrees to the horizontal you get, the greater the horizontal component of the force is, and therefore, it's harder to stay upright. As for scissor kicks, you have 2 forces (each leg). What you want to do, is kick back with the same force as you kick forward.....since the forces are equal and opposite, the net horizontal force will be 0 (meaning you won't fall over). And for scissor kicks, if you've got enough strength, you can kick PERFECTLY horizontal....which I think looks nicer if you can get the jump using JUST your arm strength....but when learning/whatever, you can kick 'em at angles (With your legs pointing upwards).....if the angles are close to the same (in each leg with respect to the horizontal), then you need an equal force in each leg. This will cancel out the horizontal component, but still give you some upward force (Assuming you kick with more force than gravity), since the only force acting in the opposite direction is gravity.....and therefore, you hop.

That was long, and probably pointless...but ah well. Hope you're either smart, or took/are taking some physics, or else you'll be like "Force? What the hell?" lol

Peace.

To understand what the hell mowics was talking about - 12-30-2003, 09:20 AM

okay the idea he is trying to impose is this...
Force = A force on a body causes a body to accelerate. A force can either pull or push. These are measured in Newtons...

Vertical Force:

So lets theoretically say that you have a perfect handstand... and lets also say that gravity is a force that is equal to g. Okay so you are doing a handstand... and you push off against the ground with a force big enough to beat gravity, so a force of your weight lets say W so you are pushing W + g.... So what do you get from this... you have to strong enough to be able to push yourself off the ground... so

Horisontal force:

Lets face it perfect handstands are hard... and why is this? because our legs aren't straight... or the forces that are pulling our different sides down aren't equal... okay so lets say this say this is a perfect hand stand:
_|_
..|
where you are in the middle, and all the little lines Which represent forces are equal to each other... what might confuse you is that you may think of that as looking a person doing a handstand from straight... what I mean picture that on the ground... and the forces on you are pulling equally from those 4 directions... okay so if you are able to achieve that you have no problems right because everything is balancing out and the only thing you have to worry about is your strength... now lets say something changes

lets say that the forces end up like this
|__
|

you are going to fall over to the right because there is an imbalance of force...

okay...so the idea I am trying to impose upon you is this... if you can balance out your own forces then you will have an easier time balancing...

another thing to think about if you bend ur legs (bad technique) you will find it easier to balance because when your legs are straight they are further away from you and a small movement will throw you down..

soo what was that about the kicking thing and forces? okay say you have your legs spread so that the forces are balanced... now the tough part... you must scissor kick your legs at the same time at the same speed... otherwise your horisontal forces will not be balanced...

Main ideas:

1.to achieve a bounce you must be able to hold your weight and at the same time exert enough force from your arms against gravity...

2. To achieve good balance you must be able to balance forces in all directions. you must make your body more or less symetrical (weight wise)

3. the further your feet are from your body the harder it is to balance.

4. when you scissor kick you must balance your forces... to do this you must kick them at the same time and at the same speed...

I don't know how much this can help you but hey it was worth a try..

peace

able to hold handstands is a bonus.then u bend ur knees and hop and kick up at the same time, land w/ elbows a bit bent if u wanna go to the next one.
