handstand tips - 09-17-2003, 07:42 PM

here's some tips for handstands.
- find a partner. go into a handstand and when you're almost vertical, ask your partner to grab your legs. Then your partner can help correct your legs and your handstand as you try to find your center of balance. The main things you want in your handstand are:
* straight feet, dorsiflex the feet
* feet together
* straight back, if your back is arched in then crunch your stomach as if you're doing a situp
* hands about shoulder with
* hands are pushing against the ground, not just holding there, like you're actually pushing against the floor.
* head is tucked in or else looking the other way. usually people try to look forwards and this makes it unbalance
* basically just try to make your whole body straight

the idea of this exercise is to use your partner to hold you up while he/she tells you what to fix about your handstand. when you are basically straight, your partner can sort of guide you to what he/she thinks is the center and you can try to correct yourself and find your center of balance, cause once you get your center of balance you can hold'em forever.

yeah i dont really dig your post man but i think its better for you to do a handstand by yourself and not depend on someone else to help you...you'll build more confidence and trust more in yourself that way..you dig?

ya its good to learn handstands on ur own, but when u first start usually you can't hold it that long. t his is so you can find your balance and know what it feels like to do a right handstand. this way when you start learning a handstand, you'll learn it the right way.

Not a bad guide made, but straight legs in a handstand?, thats like holding a freeze, straight up legs is hard to balance and u'll probably fall back or just tip over if u go into it a bit too much.
You have to have your legs bending, usually when handstands are almost perfected u'll tend to keep hand stepping back, the trick is to bend your legs forward while in handstand so u dont handstep backwards or forwards and u hold it perfectly.
Putting your legs together is definetly not neccesary either.
There is someone who sometimes comes training down at the sports centre and he does straight legs and he can hold it for 6-10 seconds.
You could keep trying that if u wish but he was much better than me at one point and i overtook him easy using this method, well finding out for myself, i use to have an easier time balancing on 1 hand : p
I can handstand until my arms get weak so just try it. peace.

hm ya definitely agreeable. this guide is good for if you want to get perfect balance and strength and hold it for like 5 years, its like a gymnastic style guide. mm but if you just wanna get some handstands, bent legs is easier.
