agh, i'm lost -

I generally don't post threads for help but I'm completely lost -- There's no one here who can halo, so I read the guide here, and it made sense (i understood it and could picture the motion), but I have nowhere to start or even nowhere to try to make progress on ..
When I try to start a halo from mill, 1) I can't keep my head down (habit from mills), 2) when i DO keep my head down and roll on it I just end up doing a mill on my head, I have an instinct to collapse and keep going, and 3) when i try it slow so I can overcome that instinct, I have no idea how to motion my legs and hips so that I might actually stay up.. i just kind of fall onto my neck and continue like a mill. I'm wayyy too used to mills.
So, any tips? Any exercises I could work on to get me better ready for it, or maybe an explanation on the physics of it so I can understand it better? I generally understand how things work, but here I'm clueless. I don't know how it works.
(same issue for airflare, but at least airflare i know how to practice it -- with halos, i can't even make attempts because i either have to start with no momentum or i automatically go into mills)
Formerly Pommy.
