Graffiti Clothes? - 03-10-2006, 08:19 PM

Hey, just wondering, and forgive my ignorance, but are things like clothing with Graffiti/Writing on them just stuff worn by posers or something people in Writing culture don't mind? I personally like clothes with graffiti artwork on them, but I know that the majority of that stuff is just commercialization and the artwork just done by professional artists, not real Writers. But what about like if someone wears clothing in which they put the Writing on it themself (like a shirt that someone put their own Writing on)??

I would guess Hip-Hop and Writers wouldn't like some clothing line that has Graffiti on it, but regular clothing in which someone put their own Writing on they wouldn't mind.

What are you guys opinions on this? I ask because I don't really know. I have always been under the notion that "Hip-Hip clothing" is for posers and real people of Hip-Hop culture wear whatever they want because Hip-Hop shuns commercialization and they want to be original and creative. Does putting one's own Graffiti on clothing constitute being original and creative?

Yeah thats the only problem i have with getting a graff shirt, wearin someone elses pieces is kinda retarded. But then agian its all art, ain't it? I wish there was some good legit undergroundish place to get dope shirts, most commercial sites with graff type shirts suck ass, seems like it doesn't come close to real graffiti out in the streets. I think putting your own graffiti on clothing would be tight, maybe not the most original shit, but i don't think anyone really does that.

this is stupid, seriously. no offense or anything. wear whatever the fuck u wanna wear, why do u have to define what's considered hip hop and what's not from what other people say?

oh...and...
www.tribalgear.com

and much to your dismay, most commercial graffiti designs ARE done by 'real' writers.

and sleep, there are places, u just aren't looking.

Well, see I didn't know that, but that is what I always thought GC, that you just wear whatever you want. Hip-Hop can be a hard culture to understand though, sometimes (at least for me).

if i think a good piece looks sick, and i want to wear sick clothes, why can't i wear a t-shirt with a good piece on it?

if you go out and by shit cuz u think it "looks hip-hop" then whatever...i have some tribal gear cuz it looks dope.

you're overthinking SO many aspects of graffiti and hip-hop, ryouko

Think about it, you have writers learning the ins and outs of entire transport systems, risking serious injury even death, arrest and criminal records that would limit your opportunities for the rest of your life, for what? To simply paint a picture, does this seem logical to you? If the answer is no then it is most likely that you don’t fathom the idealism behind graffiti.

IF you have the $$$...
get a gang load of plain clothes, ie. white T's
get a gang load of fabric markers
get a gang load of airbrush equipment

then you can make a GANG LOAD of your own customized clothes with your own pieces on it.

one of my friend does this "silkscreen" thing to put designs on shirts, not sure but i think she scans it and then theres a machine/press thingy that puts on the design.

or theres the "iron-on" stuff, where you scan, print, then iron on the design. im not sure if they stay on for a decent amount of time or wash off though.

peace

the silk screening process is a lot different than airbrushing or press ons, u should actually learn how to do that one before u attempt it.

If you're around the L.A. area. I'd recommend you going to Maintain on Sunset. They sell Montana's, skateboards, clothes and etc.

i'd buy graff shirts from bombingscience or artcrimes, but only as a flag to other writers in the city, make some new friends/bombing partners. but i'm never gonna buy some mark eko gear with a "tag" on it fuck that
