For female writers... -
11-24-2005, 11:47 AM
Just saw the link posted in another thread about a site promoting female writers.
It contained the words "no criticism" and it got me thinking.
(Note to Neska - this isn't a dig at your thread, just your thread provoked the thought)
The thing I've always noticed being a guy in hiphop, is huge amounts of criticism pointed at my graff and bboying. Personally I see it as a good thing.
I'm interested to know what some female writers think of the whole no criticism, just fun approach. Does it help or hinder?
Just to be clear, this isn't an anti-female thread. I've got respect for women hiphop heads who can hold their own with the guys and better. One of my best graff-mission stories ever was writing with a girl, I think it's great. I'm just not convinced about the no criticism approach as being one that is positive towards the standard women writers achieve.
Thoughts?
A bboy without style, is like a broken pencil.
There's just no point.

This thread kinda got me thinking.
This may sound like a diss too but i promise it's not intended to be. i've notice in the gallery there are pics of b-girls doing the most god awful stuff but if they're hot they get told there ace and rated ten by all the guys. I must admit i find that too be quite insulting to the girls and also, as stiff said, it wont help there progress if there being told they've got the technique right and it's wrong.
Children are people too.....Worthless, incomplete little people!!!

I keep forgetting how quiet the graff board can be.
Girls please post any thoughts you have on this, I'm interested to hear what you think about it.
Suppose it'd be good to hear what any male writers think too, especially if you have experience writing with girls.
God Bless.

in this crew i used to be at, called BFF there was this girl that was kinda good at writng, i mean, i think she made a few using mr wiggles letters but then i saw that she started doing her own letter and they were pretty good! i think that since most girls r into the mainstream hip hop, they dont know about the real hip hop so they dont use their talents on it like they do in somethign else, if they did, there would be far way better female writers or even bgirls. they just need to know about it and well just try to do it!

in my opinion, although its always great creating things for ur own use or for like the "just fun" approach, which is always good to do things like that yanno jus for urself or whatever.. but if u really wanna help elevate ur style and techniques then gettin critz isnt a bad thing at all.. if u actually go out an write thas kind of what you want.. helpful crits is always that.. helpful. to anyone not jus guys yanno. ive been writin for a few years now an i get crits all the time from my boys.. and i love em for it an ya kno i jus give it straight back to em.. feel bad sometimes tho but thas aright lol
as long as it aint hurtful it can be helpful.. if someones goin on say that u cant do shit right then naw that type of criticism is obviously not what yah wanna hear but gettin help or summin wit like i dunno 3d or somethin.. cant hurt ya right?...
an i dunno bout akers post.. i mean, i completely agree that u should try an learn shit for urself an have ur own style and everything, no doubt, but if someone knows what they are talkin about and are willin to point summin out or give ya sum help or tips on summin, ya might as well listen cuz it aint gonna hurt. thas all im sayin i guess lol
ya.. i dunno, hope i helped a bit. lol peas`
peace out,

aker sounds so spiteful...relax dude, go eat a donut.
writing is a self taught art. if you ever go outside and write for real, and chill with real writers you'll see how helpful critiques u will get..but that's all part of the game. don't expect anyone to take it easy on you, or give u easy props...expect the hate, it's comes with the territory.
my opinion on the whole girl thing is pretty simple. any girl who tells me they're doing this for fun and not to critique them or only give them constructive comments, i pretty much tell to fuck off. i don't care who you are, bgirl, bboy, female male, writer, emcee, dj, bootlegger, if ur shit is dope ill tell u, yo that shit is tight, ill give u props, but if ur wack, ill tell u straight up ur wack. i don't treat girls any different than guys. i think that's a major problem in hip hop, girls tend to get easy props, cuz they're girls. they don't seem to mind too much half the time either, but if u ever say that girls are weaker than guys or guys or better or anything they go into an uproar. i believe girls are equal to guys, if a guy can do it, a girl can do it too, maybe even better, who knos. but that's my stance on the whole thing, gender really has no role in it for me.

GC - Nice Post - especially "if you go out and write for real".
I know what you mean about the kind of crits you get and wht that means it's a self taught art.
About the most constructive I got was "that piece is wack and i lined you out"
My response "so f*****g what?"
Course I made sure he couldn't say that about my next one.
He was a tosser anyway though.
I have come across occational heads who were happy to go through my blackbook and give real constructive crits, and one guy MAK ONE from Iconoclast Crew actually showed me how to get something off the paper onto the wall once too - top guy (as are Juice and other ICC members) if you see him at a show chat to him, safe as they come.
In general though yea, it's all on you.
