Cool flow - 06-13-2004, 11:32 AM

ok.. i've spent a while away from the board to do other junk (skateboarding, fishing.. and more importany STUDYING) and now that i'm back i'm gonna try to take all the newbies and give em some hardcore tips and advise and see if we can help y'all improve some! i'm not super good at the game, but i do know some shit that can help all of yas..

first lesson:

FLOW!

flow.. i cant stress anough that flow is a neccesity. there isnt anyone who can really deny it..

to have good flow, a few thigs must be accounted for.

style.
you're style should be smooth and shouldnt change partway through a peice. keep your style solid and if you make a change to one part of it, make sure the whole peice reflects that change. there are a few exceptions to the rule, but if youre a toy, you shouldnt argue with this rule 'cause its not likely that you can change style partway through the peice and be effective at the same time.

aerodynamics
no that dosent mean make all your peices smooth like an airplane's wing on the borders. what i mean by this, is you were to take your peice and draw a forcefeild on it, there wouldnt be any un-neccecary walls blocking the rest of it. basically, what i'm saying is if possible, make your peice streamlined..

extentions...

dont make extentions that go too far out.. it tends not to look very good if your peice is clumped together and theres an arrow that flys out a mile from your peice.. please.. dont do this.. it's a mistake i've probably seen more newbies make that any other..

neatness.
another thing newbies do is make a peice sloppy...
basically, make your lines SMOOTH. i've seen more battles lost over neatness than anything else... i've seen someone who shoulda owned lose a battle because thay were sloppy.
keep your coloring clean and use a sharpie or other permanent fineline marker to re-do your outline and keep it clean.

also as far as neatness goes, make sure you'r peice itself is neat. you dont need an extra extention that makes your peice look messy..

again, there are always exceptions to these rules.. but dont mess with something unless you can make it effective.

also, dont be afraid to correct me. if you think my theorys are wrong, i'm willing to take criticism.. and argue a point.

just so no newbs ask, flow ain't something you can teach.

Think about it, you have writers learning the ins and outs of entire transport systems, risking serious injury even death, arrest and criminal records that would limit your opportunities for the rest of your life, for what? To simply paint a picture, does this seem logical to you? If the answer is no then it is most likely that you don’t fathom the idealism behind graffiti.

true, you cant teach flow.. but you can improve with some constructive critisism.. maybe i'll just have to throw down some more examples lol!
