most influential writer (to the culture, not necessarily personally) - 09-03-2003, 09:50 PM

title says it all. who do u guys think is the most influential writer for the culture as a whole? i ask this because i have to write a history paper on an influential individual from any aspect of life, but i just can't choose which writer to spotlight. my inital thoughts were (in this order): Dondi, Tracy168, Zephyr, and Futura2000, but what do u guys think?

Think about it, you have writers learning the ins and outs of entire transport systems, risking serious injury even death, arrest and criminal records that would limit your opportunities for the rest of your life, for what? To simply paint a picture, does this seem logical to you? If the answer is no then it is most likely that you don’t fathom the idealism behind graffiti.

Mine.. well I don't know.. so many writers are good. But I think that the most influential writters I know are Saber, Dondi, and the Kops crew. But without the infulence of Rangi, (a.k.a Madwak) I would never have been in this scene... and would never use the god given talent that I have. Thank you as well to everybody on this forum, mainly Kombyn, and GM... thank you so very much for makeing me want to strive to do better and be more then just to average shmo!

ahhhh i finally wrote my paper on dondi....so here it is (the paper was limited to 9 sentences max., so there are a lot of run-on sentences, and i had to cut it verrrrry short....i coulda gone on for pages) oh and the assignment was to write about an influential person in any aspect of our culture.

Donald “Dondi” White (1961-1998)

The majority of the world has never heard of Donald “Dondi” White (1961-1998), nor would they consider him to be of any influence. However, Dondi has had a profound impact on the artistic styles of thousands of graffiti artists worldwide; in fact, the majority of graffiti art has in some form been influenced by the artist that was Dondi. He was an innovator of many of the common styles now seen in major cities worldwide, twisting words into shapes never before conceived, and then transferring those masterpieces onto walls and trains, while risking arrest, injury and even death. In order to see his influence, all one has to do is visit one of the many websites devoted to Dondi and read the guestbook; statements such as, “I can remember when I just started writing when I was a youngster and seeing the stuff DONDI would do, and that gave me the motivation to bomb and make graffiti a part of my life and a part of me.” (Feem GTF crew) are obvious testaments to the fact that Dondi, a single man armed with a can of paint, has changed the way that people view the world, and the way that people think. Thousands of memorial pieces have been devoted to the artist, including one tucked away behind a shed near the Nanaimo Skytrain station in Vancouver. Donald White elevated what was once nothing more than petty vandalism into an art form embraced by those truly respectful of the subculture that is graffiti.

R.I.P. DONDI CIA...a true king
