I think that's the best description of flow by anyone Ground Control. Props for that. Another thing that goes into it that I was thinking about last night is when there is too much decoration for it's own good. Like having too many arrows, too many connections, and too many knobs.

Thanks a lot man...you made my day

Ya kno i've pondered the same thing as well at one time or another...and to this day i can't really come up with a solid answer. On one hand i can see if the writer is inexperienced and can't really manage to integrate the objects he/she wishes to use in a way that is appealing, it can be a very bad thing...but then i think about the really good stuff that involves a lot of symbols and such. I dunno, i think beauty does lie in simplicity, but i moreso believe that the definition of simplicity is totally up to the writer.

lol, I'm not gonna try any actual pieces yet, just practice when I'm bored. I'm not too understanding on the flow, I'm an emcee so I do understand what it means in lyrical rap, but as I develop a bit in my graffiti skills I'm sure I'll get a more capable understanding of it.

I've tried a bit of adding curves to the arrows and making certain "bases" of the letters a bit thicker than usual, it makes it look much more..... balanced I guess. I've tried to get rid of some of the extra arrows by actually connecting individual arrow strands (sounds a little like Biology, lol) to other ends. Kinda hard to explain, but I'll keep practicing a bit on this style and play with other styles a bit.

Thanks for the help guys. Peace out.

Oh btw, a REALLY important point that a lot of ppl don't kno...KEEP YOUR WORK BALANCED. Think of it like a scale...you want it even...don't make one side more decorated than another. I'm not trying to imply that the sides should be simitrical..but you don't want one side to look amazing and one side to look like shit. And just a bit of info...this is known as "tension." Tension should create an equal pull of opposing forces on both sides of the artwork.

As for flow...hmm..think of it exactly like a beat if you're an emcee. Look at it this way (forget everything about flow right now)...your beat is always constant am i right? It goes in a smooth motion and provides the ability for you to create your rhymes. If the beat was irregular and had all these constant noises and random beats popping up everywhere...not only would it pretty much really blow and lose all melody but it would also give you a lot of trouble trying to rap to it. When you spit you're beat is always there, it's compiled in a certain way to give you a "flow" and is not randomly assembled in various patterns just to make noise.

Now think of graffiti...apply that same concept to it. If there is no "flow" within the artwork, how could it possibly be "melodious"?

Alright, any improvement guys? I think that the left side looks a bit more "prettier" than the other, but I think it looks a lot nicer than the scramble I had before. Peace.

By the way Soviet, I havn't seen any of your graffiti, well, except the ones on the computer. What happened? You don't have a scanner or a digital camera?

Peace out.

Jumar, when you do a piece, draw it in pencil first and than use like a gel pen or a rollerball pen and trace the outlines really cleanly. It adds a lot to have clean lines.
Maybe try coloriing it a little. But it is better than the first one. Nice work.

Cool 01-26-2003, 12:02 AM

mostyly, i spend hours on www.artcrimes.com and check out the styles of the world, then i find one form of lettering, take out what i dont like and peice in most of my own stuff, then, i ignore what isnt mine and add my own stuff in, making it a completely different word, and a new style i can call my own, i like to use old-school style a lot, simple colorful; tags with pictures all over them and spots.. sometimes stars...

recently tho, i've spelled out whatever word i want, found the main charachteristics of each letter, then alter what isnt important and weave the letters together in a seperate drawing. then it's a matter of making it look 3D and adding mad colorations to it, ink it and add it to my blackbook.

i like to draw some freaking creature or charachter and describe it in the lettering next to it.. like a mutant-looking freek with "freek show" lettered next to or behind it..
