just a quick note while i have a minute to post....

step one to try out would be to check out the newbie thread. Not the most recent posts, but try going back a year or so into the archive and read forward. You will noticed some things being repeated over and over. THOSE things are where you should start.

Simple letters, over and over. no effects, no colour, no styles. Just simple, arial font looking letters until you can do them almost perfect without thinking about it.

I know its a pain, but the best way to become proficient is to know the basics inside and out.

that's directed to me i guess?
yeah, been lurking a lot and for quite some time here. the approach of doing those basics is quite solidly in my head already (newbie thread, stickies). at like, the end of july I started doing 1 A4 pages every day, both sides, like, constructing basic letters and just spamming them over and over. like 8 pages that way. now I have kinda strayed to doing one side of the A4 for one letter, building and experimenting with letters. just got to Q today(22th sheet of paper). I dont know if that's too early, but I sure am going to finish the alphabet and then see what I'll do to improve after.
that freezinlegs one is the only one I've colored in ages btw. when practicing letter structure and stuff, i kinda keep it only pencil.

so. if you got any feedback, then i'm very open to it.

Hey I'm in the same boat. I'm not going through the alphabet like you but I do go over and over the letters of the name I'm working. One rule I read is that I cannot give up on piece, try to save it. So, that is what I do hence all the erase marks on my work. I think that helps knowing you have to finish what you start.

that comment i made above wasnt directed at anyone directly, it was for everyone. It takes a ton of practice and doing things over and over and over before things become smooth enough to be worth presenting to the world. Its not the easiest thing to explain, and i know it doesnt come off as very polite, but everyone in this thread needs more work on letter structure and less focus on style. It will never look good with the fancy stuff added until the letters themselves can stand on their own.

A really easy method is to grab a calligraphy book and break your line down to 5 sections. Those books were golden for me as a kid(yes, pre-internet). Not only do you learn the mechanics of the letters themselves, but you can look at them broken down and see how all the styles conform to the same basic principles.
