Is Bboying a sport? - 10-25-2007, 04:04 AM

DONT FLAME ME

I've been debating with this issue with my crew and some other local crews. Before we get into the matter, let me first Define what a sport is

According to wikipedia

"Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors."

Now let me make this clear bboying is an art form thas consists of technique and balance. But according to the definition of sport bboying is also a brutal and competitive and bboying does have rules.

So basically Art Vs Sport

mmmmmmmmm

Bboying is a dance

dance=generally refers to movement used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting.

And Also an art form

But some people think its a sport because of the Mainstream its gotten or because people have no knowledge of bboying and the culture.

What are your comments on this? Do you think bboying is a sport?

Wikipedia, if I'm not mistaken, is maintained by the general public, meaning you or I could submit articles to it. Therefore it's open to a bit of error. If you want a true definition, just go to the dictionary.

Sport
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.

By these standards, BBoying indeed would be a sport. BBoying is also an art. It's also a dance.

I'm an electrician. I'm a construction worker. I'm a technician. There's no reason why you should worry about which 1 word to call something by.

You won't see BBoying in the olympics, most likely, but it is a competitive sport in many places.

Bboying is NOT a sport.

I read this on DB's profile a while back, it goes something like this :
"If bboying was a sport, then all we'd want to do is win(battles)" ..or something like that.

If all your after is winning, then you're not really bboying. Dancing comes from the heart and your moves are often influenced by your mood( at least mine are anyways).

You said dancing is a form of expression?? You've basically answered your question already.

Peace yooooooooooo =D

I hustle regardless of the way you talk shit and laugh

Coz their mind is narrower than the righteous path
It's funny how on the block niggaz will kill you for cash
But never raise their gun and cry out "Freedom at last."

Compare BBoying to football, baseball, basketball, etc. In competition, leagues, whatever, you're out to win. Similar to in a battle, you'd be there to win.

But then there's someone like me who doesn't do it to battle. I do it cause it's fun, good exercise, and a way for me to do something with music(cause god knows I can't sing for shit). I'd relate me to the guys hanging out just shooting around on the basketball court, or people who just like to toss a football or baseball around with a few friends.

Look at my definition of a sport. That's straight out of the dictionary. It says straight out hunting and fishing. How many people who do these two "sports" are really out for the win? I fish all the time. I've never been in a fishing competition though.

The 3rd definition notes that it can be for recreation, diversion or a pleasant past time.

By definition in the English language, BBoying is a sport. Whether people choose to call it such is going to just become a debate similar to how some people get pissed off when people call BBoying "breakdancing".

i dont know anythign about bboying or any bboy things.

but you can't really call Popping, Locking, Salsa, Waltz and other type of dances are sport can you?

So I'm just wondering, If Bboying is a dance, why do some people consider it as a sport?

edit: *and other type of dances a sport

No one said it wasn't.

And there are quite a few "respectable" b-boys that agree that when you b-boy competitively, with rules, a prize, brackets, etc. it does become a sport. If you want to argue that point, I'm afraid you'll have to take that up with Webster's Dictionary.
