Why you SHOULD NOT do pushups. ADDED: And why -
07-13-2005, 01:31 AM
Firstly, I'm not trying to "decree" that "YOU CANNOT DO PUSHUPS!". I'm just trying to say what the dangers are (wow that sounded lame) and why you should find other ways instead.
Pushups give you these little cracks and fractures in your bones, too small to see, feel, or show up on MID scans or X-rays.
And ESPECIALLY DON'T DO WRIST PUSHUPS!!! (That's what my doctor said. He was totally stressing out and yelling it. It was weird).
Okay, say you're 15 when you start doing wrist pushups.
By 20, chances are you won't be able to break anymore.
Just work out, (like on a machine or do rock climbing or somthing) to get stronger AND keep your bones from breaking.
Doing pushups is the same as jumping off your balcony and landing on your wrists.
It just takes longer.
(Believe me, my best friends dad is a radiologist)

Fine. Here's more proof:

Firstly, what does that have to do with anything? Alright, moving on...

all the athletes dat play rugby and soccer do push ups and recommend them for us
|
They don't do footwork and stuff. They do their pushups and then stand up.
Another thing, my brothers in Medical school.
They keep stressing how he should NOT do push ups for Tae Kwon Do.
So you're gonna believe a bunch of athletes over doctors?
Same thing at Air Cadets (yes, Canada DOES have an army. What a waste of money.)

that radiologist is obviously not very experienced to know that fractures heal and heal into stronger bone too.
|
He has his PHD.

dont they heal and become stronger bone?
|
That's what happens with muscle.
With bone, your bones don't have a chance to heal because you keep puting stress on the fractures. Another thing, if that's true, then why don't big bone fractures heal by themselves. You need a cast. And even that doesn't always work.

Just so you know, I used to do pushups all the time. And wall pushups and everything. Until my doctor told me I'd screw myself over if I kept doing them.

alot of things you do are bad for you.
sometimes its just impractical to avoid absolutely EVERYTHING bad for you, so dont do anything obviously stupid would be the best thing to do I reckon.
|
Yeah, that's true, it is impractical. If what you do doesn't include using your wrists, then it doesn't matter as much. Avoid what you need to because it's relevant to you.

if you got mega-super-micro-mini-ultra-small-tiny cracks in your bones and you cant pick em up THEN HOW DO YOU KNOW U GOT EM???
|
You know because too many people's bones break inexplicably, and this is the only reason.
Quote:
|
yeah except when u jump off the balcony and try to land on ur wrists they break
|
I'm trying to compare it to landing on your legs... so pretend your wrists don't break, okay?
There are other ways to get more upper body strength. I do rock climbing and that works way better.
And you can do crickets and stuff... theres just no point in putting extra stress on your bones
I just don't want all of you to break your wrists warming up.
(These pics are pretty bad, but the first one is of a wrist (duh), the arrows pointing to the two biggest fractures (cuz you can't see the small ones, like I said above). The second pic shows how those fractures need to be healed with a brace or a cast.)
You're all taking me the wrong way. If you're wondering why I'm telling you this, It's not because I'm a pansy (means the same as puss or whatever) I used to do push ups, I got tons of wrist fractures, and now my left wrist is permenantly crooked.
So please stop posting on this thread just to bad-mouth me. Cuz there's really no point. Getting mad at me won't make this any more or less true.

haha, if push ups are that bad for you, Bboying must be like 50x worse, cuz at time you are actually jumping and trying to catch yourself (e.g Broncos, crickets, Jackhammers, ect), not just pushing up.
Bboying is what you make it.

i think she sais "wrist pushups are bad" not normal push ups
there's no way that normal palm push ups are bad
and those fractures (stress fractures?), dont they heal and become stronger bone?
isn't that essentially what happens when we grow up, our bones harden and become stronger from the weight we put on them
i mean if u laid down all ur life, ur bones would not support u if you decided to try to stand up one day. the stresses u place on ur body decides how strong it becomes.
if u went crazy and did like mad push ups where u pushed ur chest 2 feet in the air and landed on ur hands again, then those pushups may be bad.
that radiologist is obviously not very experienced to know that fractures heal and heal into stronger bone too.
you can choose to play it safe and be boring all your life, or you can take a chance and breakdance
