Hip Hop and Stereotyping. -
07-07-2005, 06:44 AM
Let’s face it, stereotyping has been a part of hip-hop for quite some time. How bad is it? Well let’s put it this way:
If stereotyping was hating then hip-hop would be George Bush.
It’s true though, the majority of people who aren’t hip-hop heads have or still do stereotype it. How many times have you heard the following:
“Hip-Hop is a bunch of crotch grabbing wannabe gangsters, stupid kids who spin on their backs, teenagers trying to piss of their parents by spraying on walls etc.”
Or
“Hip-hop is a bad example for the youth of today, promoting violence, drugs, improper sexual activities etc.”
Or
“Hip-hop is crapzorz, har har har.”
I’ve seen people get pretty pissed off when they hear this or similar things. Why? I have absolutely no idea. It takes absolutely no skill to form a shrewd opinion of something you haven’t experienced personally. In fact, stereotyping (along with ignorance) pretty much just prove the fact that you have the intellectual capacity of a brine shrimp. What’s more is that they don’t realize that it can be flipped back on them.
Was that kid a rock junkie? Well you can just point out that rock music is a bunch of emo fags who scream about their life being hard and misunderstood even though they earn big ass salaries and party every night. How there’s not a lot of skill attached to make noise and that your baby brother can do it as well, if not better etc. See, easy huh?
However we know that the above statement isn’t entirely true JUST as those aforementioned ones about hip-hop aren’t. I myself have never quite grasped the concept of needing to talk trash about another persons choice of music and lifestyle. Aren’t we supposed to be unique? What do you gain from it? Just because I don’t like a certain style of music does that mean I have to hate it? I certainly don’t think so.
To get back on the image hip-hop is sometimes associated with, we all know that commercial aka mainstream hip hop is largely to blame. Yet people enjoy this style of music (*resisting temptation to diss*) and I can’t make them change their taste in music. Preaching why underground is better isn’t going to help jack squat, we all know that. I still believe that a bigger emphasis should be put on the difference between these two styles so people can start forming proper opinions of what each one reallyconsists of.
Aight I just noticed how much I’ve written so I’ll stop here. What’s your opinion on this? How do you feel? Do you like cookie dough? Seriously guys I want your honest opinion, share your thoughts etc.
NOTE: I have removed -this- on Stiff's request.

EDIT: Not all "mainstream" hip-hop is bad mind you.

Haha, I agree with the comment on "commercialism". Sad, but true.

*Atheist
Yeah, I've been in many situations where people pretty much want to force their opinion on me. Like I said in my post, you don't have to enjoy a certain style of music, but there's no need to outright diss it ya know? Unless it's country music mind you... j/k*
* Or am I?

a lot of ppl are ignorant and mis-educated.
ya kno i used to think that hip hop was all b/s and dumb and shit like that, but still listened to rap cuz they had tight beats haha. Then i found out that breakin' is part of hip hop and i was like "WHAT? REALLY?!?!" Then i was like "oooooooooh." when i learned the difference between mainstream and underground. ahaha i was so miseducated...but yea, fuckin capitalism and bush...and this country.
Hip Hop is the only culture that disrespects itself.
"Hip-Hop is what you make of it."
"Education, that's Hip-Hop. Music and dancing is just to sooth you."
-Bboy Machine
"Without James Brown, there would be no Hip-Hop." Unknown MC

What can I say? I think the Hip Hop culture is really sterotyped because of mainstream music. Nowadays, all I hear is the same thing from the same people ; sex, pimpin`, girls, money...you know what I mean. And ... being in Junior High, there are many posers that think they're gangsters...It annoys me, but I won't say anything. To me, the Hip Hop culture is one of my loves. From the music to the elements. I mean ; think about it, Hip Hop goes wayyy back. Vintage, you could say. And mainstream is more about the trends. It's not very unique, if you ask me. I mean, not ALL mainstream music is bad..I agree with Riff. But the majority of it is false and it jus kills the way people look at the Hip Hop culture. But, to me, Hip Hop will always be stereotyped...with this mainstream music biz going on and all. You can't do nothin` about it. No matter what, the Hip Hop culture will always have lovin` from me.
