Math Help Thread -
04-14-2005, 08:27 PM
Ok I'm im GATE classes something like AP but for junior high school. And well i'm 13 but im taking 9 grade math classes and I need help with some stuff so can so people exlpian this to me. Some subjets I need help with are Number properties, Operations, and linear expressions, and some other stuff too.Here's so examples;
When is 2x[size=1]2[size=1] + x- 100 More than or equal to 0 true for all real numbers?
Solve 2/3(-6x+9) - 1/2(2x- 4) >23
Solve for X
x=3(5-2x)-6 More than or equal to 4x
How many counterexamples would be needed to refute the assertion for the following example?
x + 2 > 5 is always true for he replacement set {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7}
Chose the point that lies on the graph of this equation:
1/2y - x =3
Determine the equation of a line that is perpendicular to 2y - x = 9
and passes through (-1, 7)
And some other ones, but i really don't understand them. Can anyone help?

for these problems, look at them like a+b=c
in stead of
a+b>c
then at the end of the problem, replace the = with a >
you have some common factors in the parenthesis, a hint, turn
(-6x+9) into -3(2x+3)
that will give you (2/3)*3 write it out on paper and its pretty obvious that the 3 cancels out and you have 2(2x+3)
use that logic and simplify the left side of the ">" you'll probly end up dividing both sides of the > by some number and ending up with (x-something) > some number then just solve.

i dont understand the question, but if you plug 0 into the equation, its wrong.... i guess only 1
Chose the point that lies on the graph of this equation:
1/2y - x =3
if the question is supposed to say chose "A" point and not "THE" point, then i think i know how to do this...
solve the equation for y. what that means is you get it to look like y= stuff
move the x over, multiply by 1/2 etc...
Determine the equation of a line that is perpendicular to 2y - x = 9
and passes through (-1, 7)
to do this, you need to set it up in slope intercept form. (right now it is in standard form)
slope intercept form looks like...
y= mx + b
(m is the slope ((rise over run, change in y/ change in x)), and b is the y intercept (where y =0)
since its a multiple step problem, im going to do them here assuming you know almost nothing about this stuff.
write the equation
2y - x = 9
ok-- solve for y (put it in slope intecept form)
add x to both sides
2y -x +x = 9 + x
therefore
2y = 9+x
divide both sides by 2
2y/2 = 9/2 + x/2
therefor
y= 9/2 + x/2
since we want it to look like y=mx + b , we will rewrite it
y= (1/2)x + 4.5
in this equation m= 1/2 ----> the slope is 1/2
you can now graph the first line.
the second line will be perpendicular to this line
this one's slope will have a slope of -(1/2) because that will make it perpendicular
take the new equation y= -(1/2)x + b and plug in your point
(-1, 7) for x,y in the new equation
7= -(1/2)(-1) + b
solve for b.
whatever b comes out as, put it in the end of this equation,
y= -(1/2)x + (B) replace (B) with the b you just got. thats how you solve those problems
And some other ones, but i really don't understand them. Can anyone help?

Thanks for trying muffin juice i managed to solve a couple with your help and bboysk8 was helping me too. Anyways here's some more if anyone else can help
When is 2x2 + x- 100 More than or equal to 0 true for all real numbers?
Note: The second 2 in the problem is squared and more than or equal to is a sign that kinda looks like this >_ but together
Solve 2/3(-6x+9) - 1/2(2x- 4) >23
Solve for X
x=3(5-2x)-6 More than or equal to 4x
Choose three consecutive odd integers such that three times the second decreased by 4 is equal to twice the third increaded by 15
Selet the equation that is equivalent to 5(x +1)- 2(3x- 2)= 9x +1

Here's another one. My calculator and computer are to stupid to show the signs so here's a picture of the problem this is like one of the hardest problems in this and i'm barely in 8th, but nobody i know can help me with this one. maybe some smart like VP or sk8 can help me with this one

I have shown anaktix the light. Turned him against his recent love....math. He now sees that math is just a evil being lurking around the corner waiting to pounce on you and waste your time.

math is the shit. but, much like windmills, it feels better to teach yourself. until you get to mathmatical induction in precal. that's a bitch. hahaha i taught that shit to myself this morning and got a 100 on my test. byyyotch.

But our teacher to switched and the new bitch taught our class the same material as the normal people , them got our old teacher and expected us to already know it. So i know nothing of this. I tried to teach myself the quadratic formula and kinda know it but the rest is just blanks t me.

What is mathematicaly induction in precal?
I fucked up last year, so I got sent to advanced algebra instead of precalc, but we get taught pretty much the same thing as precalc.
Ironically, Advanced Algebra sounds far harder than PreCalc.

i disagree. when i think of algebra, i think of easy whores. when i think of calculus, i think of bitches. and OBVIOUSLY, advanced easy whores are still much easier than pre-bitches. algebra is mostly common sense anyway.
