Theres also the economical reason of area. It takes a lot more space to raise a herd of cattle or sheep than it does to grow corn or veggies to feed the same amount of people.

Its also shown that our bodies digest meat diferently and it takes more work.

And yep, red meat may eventuallly give you a massive coronary infarction.

BUT, there is NO reason not to eat fish. Its healthy, it has great nutritional valua, and it has no weighing effect on the environment or area used. I mean, what else are we gonna use the ocean for? besides a huge oil dump...

protein my friend is an essential macromolecule required up to 35% of a healthy person's diet as well as some essential lipids. do some research b4 you vegan. cause once you do you'll have to replace a substantial amount of nutrients your not getting from meat. for example the protein you get from meat will now have to be from beans/legumes/lentils and things of that nature.

There is some benefit for vegetarianism/veganism to certain people with certain health conditions. Vegetarianism/Veganism is starting to become "accidentally" popular among college students because it's a really cheap way to live.

But before you go this route, you do have to understand that there are trade-offs, especially for males. Males need at least 1 gram of protein for every pound of muscle they have on their body, preferably from an animal source. Being a vegetarian/vegan would naturally cut you off from this, so you're stuck with soy-based proteins. Soy can lower testosterone and increase estrogen in males. Females run less health risks with going vegan, because soy isn't necessarily all that bad for them, it's actually quite healthy for them (but there is now some controversy about that). Also, meat and dairy products are some of the major sources of phenylalanine and tyrosine, essential amino acids which are precursors to the neurotransmitter dopamine. A complete lack of animal based nutrition will naturally deprive you of a lot of that and can lead to depression. The only other source you can phenylalanine and tyrosine from, to some moderate degree, is wheat products, but by doing so, you're going to be eating a whole lot of carbs, and there's obvious health risks for that. Animal products are also a vital source of many essential minerals, like iron (however for males, there is a growing consensus in the scientific community that we do NOT need any iron whatsoever) and you can end up with serious deficiencies without them. Meat is also a major source of creatine. A deficiency in creatine will leave you mentally sluggish, and you'll have some super fucking thick blood because your body won't be able to store water very well. ALL vegetarians also run risks of vitamin b12 deficiency, which is an extremely serious condition. Unfortunately, the popular form of b12 that you buy in a market or whatever is CYANOcobalamin (with a cyanide molecule attached to it) and your body has to convert it (which it does poorly) into methylcobalamin & adenosylcobalamin. You can buy methyl-b12 supplements, but they're a lot more expensive.

I'm not against vegetarians/vegans, but I just think that some need to be a bit more aware of what their lifestyle can lead to. I understand for some it's a personal, moral choice, and that's cool. Just understand some of the risks you take on.

as for me, i love animals. they taste great.

hope that helps.

All the vegitarians I know are puny....
1. no one really touched on the actually answer to the question except a few.

One of the best-known benefits of vegetarianism is, however, not the low probability of having a heart attack, but the longer life expectancy. Vegetarians, on average, live a little longer than the rest of us. Whatever benefits and disadvantages vegetarian diets have, it seems that they give us a little more than they take away.

II.Lower BMI

As most vegetarian diets are low-fat ones (average vegetarian eats 25% fat less than a typical meat-eater), they usually effect in the lower Body Mass Index of an average vegetarian. This is probably the most visible of all benefits of vegetarianism and the main reason for many people to become a vegetarian.

III.Lower cholesterol level

Other widely noted benefits of vegetarianism is decreasing the cholesterol level (by 0.5 mmol/l) and subsequently, the decreased chance of suffering from a heart attack. However, due to the complexity of the heart attack issue, it is still sometimes argued that such decrease results from other factors than a vegetarian diet.
I found a little issue with II. because having a lower BMI isn't always good if I am correct the average BMI(body mass index) is 19-25 for women and for men its 20-27....

I don't really care. I love steak, tri-tip, turkey and ham during the holidays.

Edit: Mmm tri-tip is the best.

Edit: Oh and can't forget duck! AND sushi
