Too many rules for an artform - 09-14-2006, 07:01 AM

Hey all

I've been reading this forum for a while now, and I also posted a few vids for critique. I'm definitely a newbie, but that also gives me a fresh perspective... so be open enough to listen. (if you aren't, then you can stop reading here.)

By the replies I've been seeing, it seems that some people here take the "rules" too seriously... like "OMG, I've been doing this move for a year, and now I found out someone else did it before me, so I'll never do it again!"
or "dude thats a sub-style of krumping practiced in the ancient alaskan suburb of Blahville called shizaminling, and its definitely NOT animation."

Obviously, there has to be some sort of order, and you gotta have terms in order to communicate, but LIGHTEN the f**k UP. This is dancing... its supposed to be a manifestation of good vibes. Also if you're being too "professional" about things, it tends to come at the expense of creativity.

That's my opinion anyways...

Now here comes the hate-mail...

So what has krumping got to do with this forum?

And to comment about biting, its a matter of self respect and respect for others, not a matter of the 'rules.'

I wasn't referring to Krumping, it was just an example of being petty or "over-accurate" with definitions.

yeah, biting sucks, but you gotta start somewhere. I guess I'm just not into the culture as much as you guys are... battles and stuff. Unfortunately for me, I live in Israel, where this kinda dance culture doesn't really exist...

No ones being petty in correcting someone else about their terminology of poppin.
Its not like they say "Haha look at this n00b he doesnt even know this difference from bottin and animation! lozerz!" No.
They correct people because they want other people to know more about the culture and share information they they have learned in their years, to newer people in the scene.

If the roots of funkstyles is forgotten, what will it become?

When you start learning a dance, you learn the basics and foundation of the dance. From there, you develop your own style. Biting is not part of the learning process. Any half decent dancer can bite a move or even a whole personal style from someone else. If it makes you feel good, go ahead and bite. I just feel sorry for the dancer that poured all the effort into producing what you just stole from them in what? twenty minutes?

Note: The above paragraph was not made to target you even though it says 'you', its just the way i wrote it.

Ah, finally a sensible person. Maybe I misunderstood some of the stuff I read, but some people here seem to be a bit insane....

Hahaha I agree on the insanity issue. But there are rules to any artform, if you want to be a good artist at drawing realistic people, you have to learn the basics of anatomy before you even have a hope of producing good results. What is strived for by most decent members on this forum is to provide new dancers with a good funkstyles foundation with which to grow from, and we frown on biters, that is pretty similar with most people of this culture.

I like how dobb used the word "culture", because it isn't just a dance, it is an entire culture, and just like with any culture there are taboos. Whether they are there for respect or for whatever reason, they are there. Nobody is stopping you from biting or mixing two styles which should not be mixed, you can do them all you want but just realize there are consequences for breaking these taboos. Sorta like going to Iraq and waving at everybody with your left hand :P, not alot of people know that you cant do that, but that comes from the knowledge of their culture, so i guess that gets back to your second point. Besides, if the dancers or DJ's or MC's or whoever dont take the time to learn the culture to preserve it, who will?

Just my 2 cents.

*and if you really must know wtf was up with that iraq hand waving remark, alot of people in some middle eastern countries take offense if you offer your left hand for a handshake or wave with your left hand because that is the hand they wipe their asses with*

There is no wealth like knowledge, no poverty like ignorance.

if you think we're nuts.... your head would explode on wigs board.

there, you have people straight out telling you their opinions as facts (like what is dancing, and what isnt, etc etc)_.

this place is relatively unopinionated (if thats a word.. good, if its not, it still got the message across) for the most part, when compared.

btw: an EB's (or EB clone's) answer to chippa's Q: SAM!!!!!
evy1 else's: i like pie
