Welcome to the ‘Funk Styles?or ‘Popping?(umbrella term) forum at Bboy.org. Before you post in this forum, be sure to read through the following information. Especially the rules found towards the bottom.

Questions
Some Frequently asked questions are I’ll be adding more whenever some questions get to ‘Frequent?

Q. What is Popping and Hitting?
A. Popping is a west coast based Funk Style, although it became common to see a token popper on most bboy crews, popping itself is a funk style. Jigsaw of C.O.T.A Defined popping as an art form consisting of floating, ticking, wave movements, and mimickery, combined, separate, or pieced together, giving a cartoonist or robotic illusion while dancing. Popping itself is an umbrella term, used to describe many dance forms:
Popping, Waves, Glides, Hitting, Tutting, Strutting, Ticking, Robotics and Slides, just to name a few.

From Poppin.org - Interview with Poppin Pete
- "Popping is dance that my brother Boogaloo Sam created in 1976. It's only one style of dance that involves jerking the joints of your body. It's not waving, tutting, or any other style. It's its own style. Although you can mix popping with tutting, or other styles, popping still is its own thing."
- "Poppin is one style, where your whole body pops. Hitten (Hitting) is only with your arms. "

Q. What is Locking?
A. Don Campbell a Trade Technical College student accidentally stumbled across creating a dance called "Campbellocking" which eventually was featured on Soul Train and took the world by storm. Don Campbell took the hydraulic robotic movements, which were all about total control and mixed it with wild, out of control body movement dances of the tap-flash dance days plus exact stop and start movements and spiced it all with comic facial expressions and clown-like costumes to develop a whole new dance movement which is still going strong called "Locking"

Q. What is Boogaloo?
A. From the EB site (EB's knowledge page) "Boogaloo is a fluid style that uses every part of the body. It involves using angles and incorporating fluid movements to make everything flow together, often using rolls of the hips, knees, head."

Q. What is Electric Boogaloo?
A. From the EB site (EB's knowledge page) "Electric Boogaloo is the combination of the styles Popping and Boogaloo".

Q. What is Liquid-Pop?
A. Nothing, it doesn't exist. The idea that it exists is perpetuated because a crew from New Jersey, called the Liquid-Pop Collective, made videos showing themselves combining liquid and popping, you can find these videos just about everywhere. But its unique to them, and is not an actual funk style, if you want to know more about that, go to LPC LABS.

Q. I’m new here where should I start? (Or something within those lines)
A.
1) Check out the MOVE GUIDE (http://www.bboy.org/f74/s) , if you don’t know where it’s at the top of the forum. Check out the guides. It maybe a bit long to read, but it also shows your dedication and patients.

2) LEARN TO DANCE! I can’t stress this enough. There is no point in just doing moves/tricks if your not going to follow the music.

3) So I suggest (up to you) learn Popping (the style) first before you learn other styles (Waving, Gliding, Tutting, Strobing, Boogalooing, Strutting etc) because Popping will set you up with CATCHING the beats of songs. So once you learn the other styles you will have a basic understanding on how to integrate the new styles to the music.

4) Find other dancers in your area and jam out with them. It really helps if you are learning as a group than by yourself

5) If you can afford it, I suggest checking out the instructional videos from Mr. Wiggles Hip Hop.net or from The Electric Boogaloos, they are very helpful.

Q. Where can I learn Boogaloo? (added by PoppinRice)
A. First, check all the boogaloo posts (use the search page) that you can find on this forum, if all else fails, just check out Poppin' Petes Instructional VOL.1 ... its in Mr Wiggle's Webiste, which you can find just right below under links.

Q. What is up with crumping? or is it krumpin? (added by PoppinRice)
A. Crumping is a style that Boogaloo Sam does, he shrivels his head (i think thats the word?) inwards closer to his chest, like if hes going to duck, just raising his shoulders. Now dont get confused crumping with KRUMPIN (A KNOWN CLOWN DANCE) Krumpin' is not tolerated in this forum, it has no relation to funk styles at all.

Q. Where can I find songs to dance to? (added by PoppinRice)
A. Check Soulseek (link below), or check the ***SONGS TO POP TO*** thread.

Q. PoppinRice why are you so mean? (added by PoppinRice)
A. If I yell at you when you start learning funk styles, you'll learn more quicker, therefore, me being mean will help you out. (SIMON MODE FROM AMERICAN IDOL )

Rules
Here’s a small set of rules. DO NOT IGNORE THESE AND THEN WHINE ABOUT IT LATER. IT IS NOT OUR FAULT IF YOU DO NOT READ THEM. (THESE RULES AFFECT ALL SUB-FORUMS, like Move Guides and Video Clips):

1) Have threads that actually relate to this forum. Read Rule #8

2) No cursing in titles this site is viewed by younger people so keep the titles clean.

3) Be mature about things ok? Lets not hate on people for being somewhat ignorant... we are here to help each other out.
"Save the Drama for your mama." - Poppin Rice

4) If there is a problem with a certain member, alert one of the mods, and we will take care of it.

5) Before posting, check to see if your question has already been asked, use the search button, located in the top right hand corner of every page. If it has been posted before, your thread can and will be deleted.

8) Use some common sense, if a thread was for example 10 months old there is no need to 'BUMP' it back up. Unless the thread is deemed important.

7) Please post videos in the video clips forum.

8) *added by PoppinRice* Please talking about Funk related Dances ONLY. You can make relations to one and another style but please, no threads about c-walking, bboying, krumping, harlem shaking, and other stuff. This is Funk Styles! If you wanna talk about those other dances, talk somewhere else!

9) *added by PoppinRice* No drugs, porn, anything illegal. You dont want little 12 yr old dancers to smoke weed do you?

10) *added by PoppinRice* Last but not least, post video clips in the video clips sub-category forum, and guides in the move guides sub-category forum. If guides and video clips arent in their places, they will be deleted without notice. (0.o WOW im harsh!)

11) *added by PoppinRice* Recently there have been a load of threads that have their title entirely in caps, so here's a quick lesson in punctuation:
Capitals are used at the beginning of a sentence
Capitals are used for nouns
Capitals are used in shortings or abbreviations
Posting your thread or post entirely in capitals does not get it answered any quicker, sometimes not at all. On top of that, it pisses me the hell off.
Any posts or thread titles entirely in capitals will be modded.
In the mean time why not go read a book.

12) Spamming - Dont be scared to post.

A few jokes, and responses are part of the forum interaction - but try not to spam too much. Keep it on topic as much as possible. Please.

Or I'll have to delete it, then you'll lose your post count, then I'll cry, then you'll cry, then we'll all cry. Ok? Mogz

wavey is making the rules BIGGER and BOLDER and SPICIER just to make sure you people actually read them.

Thank you for taking the time to read this before posting. If you have any question just PM me.

Sincerely,
Mods

My Name is 'Lock' = PoppinLock... not Lock as in the Funk Style dance called "Locking"
