Hey tekkytk,

I can't speak too much for popping, since I'm so inexperienced at it. As for locking, some basic fundamentals you should learn first are: the basic march step (it's not hard--just put on some funk music and kinda practice walking around to the beat), wrist rolls, "Uncle Sam" points (bend your arm at the elbow so that it's pointing at the center of your chest, then point your arm straight out with a strong, decisive movement), blasts, the lock (which is essential to the dance of "locking"). Plus try to come up with different handjives (claps, pounds, floor slaps, etc.) Those add flavor to your locking...

In terms of footwork: learn scoobots, scooby-doos, skeeter rabbits, stop-&-go's, eagle drops, apple jacks, etc. Also, the various "boogiewalks", including pacing are really important to learn--you use them to go into a circle on a dance floor... sorta like your toprock in bboying...

But most of all with locking: practice your fundamentals with energy and with decisive, strong movements. Too often I see people locking and their movements are weak and they look really bored. Locking is all about feeling the funk--not about looking bored or unhappy when you're dancing...

Anyway, about bboying and popping and locking: I say "why not learn all three?!" That's what I'm trying to do. But at some point, you probably will have to decide which style you feel most comfortable with and which style you want to dedicate the most time to practicing and perfecting. If you want to be the best popper possible, well, unless you dance for a living (or perhaps maybe especially if you DO dance for a living), you are going to have to focus on popping more than locking or bboying. And the same thing goes for the other two styles...

Anyways, good luck with learning popping and locking and with bboying.

peace,

I wish so bad I could learn locking. But there are no guides, and everyone says it would be impossible to write a good one. Although somehow it's helpful to write several for popping. Hmmm.

Locking moves have the funniest names.

A bboy without style is like a leprechaun's penis. Wait, I lost my train of thought.

"The scrotum must pass through fire, else you will bear children."

It must be your brain, cause your seminola doesn't squidge that way.

"Only reason people can't dance with flow is because they have not been molested by a skunk."

You can't even talk about a routine someone did without laughing. It's like "He did a twistly flick to a fruity bear surprise to a bilbo baggins, totally ill man."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, that's awesome! I think I'm gonna put that on my profile...

Oh, if anyone needs resources on how to lock: check out the "How to Breakdance Step-by-Step" DVD, Disc 1. Zulu Gremlin does a masterclass where he lays out all the basics of locking, like the twistly flick and the fruity bear surprise... oh, I mean... nevermind...

Also, look at Chain Reaction's (OG locking group from the 70's) website, www.dancemaster.com. Their stuff is expensive, but I guess it's worth it.

For an awesome locking clip, check out Frank Jara's clip on www.popping.com.

PoppinRice: word, Locking is soooo funky. Hey man, what's up with www.ricelab.com? I visited it, but it won't let me in. Oh, and hey, do you think you can actually make an example vid. clip of how you do a practice session (for popping)? I'm learning the fundamentals, but I need to learn how to practice putting the pieces together, you know? Oh, btw: your battle clips against Pringlez were awesome. Waiting for the third one...

aiight, well, back to the grind...

Oh, word, the DVD has locking? Why did no one tell me?! I may have to shell out a few bucks for that stuff. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah it has an awesome masterclass section

quickly takes you through the raw base of:

Locking, Rocking (Bronx and Top), Popping, demonstrates animation, ticking, isolation, sacking, glides and all sorts of useful titbits you can work into any routine in some form or other

Theres a bit where Don Campbell explains what locking is and how he came up with it. Gold.

Also theres a section which demonstrates king cobra (kind of a cross between isolation, the worm, and twist-o-flex)

On disc 2 there is also footage of Frosty Freeze( ithink) busting one of the phattest og suicides you'll ever see. You'll have to find it though. Worth buying the DVD just to see that!

peace

IJon
