the True Moonwalk is DAMN HARD... - 09-24-2003, 07:24 PM

now here's what's my problem.

i've been trying to get the True Moonwalk (TMW) for a couple of months now, but i just cant seem to get it down.
it's nothing like a circle-glide... haha...

i watched and slowed down and re-watched and analysed the clip of Shrimp doing the TMW in Breakin' and i still dont get it.

the way he does it, is like, when you pivot your foot, you lift it up on it's toes and stick your knee out really far, and move your other foot out in a swinging motion. pivot that foot, lift it up on it's toes, stick out that leg's knee, and lower down the previous pivoted foot and swing it out.

i dont get the pivoting and lifting up part. i just cant get that effect. i look ultra sloppy doing it. i'll try to get a clip of whatever i have of my TMW (it's REALLY CRAPPY) so you guys can see really how bad it is.

also, the hands. yes, the hands.
look at Shrimp doing it. his hands arent doing anything. they're not waving, not moving in a "special" way, they're just relaxed, so maybe you can say that it's one of those "relaxed" glides.

and, the posture. i noticed that whenever Shrimp does the TMW (he does it a couple of times in total in Breakin') his butt kinda sticks out and he leans forward. his back is not hunched or crumped though, it's straight. so he kinda looks like ">". (of course, not THAT sharp.)

any help is appreciated...
because if there's another glide i'd want to get down, it'd be the TMW. my sideglide's deproving. time to work on it. my circle-glide isnt improving either, but i get cheers every now and then for it.
so i was just wanting to get another type of circular glide.

thanks.

your right, the true moon walk is hard, but i pretty much have it mastered. don't worry about all that pivoting junk just do your best to copy it and have someone else see out ur probs then work on them. i might have just joined today, but i do know the moonwalk it is my specialty (spell check that )

the True Moonwalk is totally different from the "moonwalk" (correctly called a Backslide) that Michael Jackson does.

the TMW can be described as (i think someone on this forum described it this way before) a wide-legged circular glide.

Poppin Smurf: thanks man, i've been working on heel-toe exercises but i'm not gonna stop there haha... and how the heck you dance in AF1's? i find it a chore because they're just not responsive to me enough. maybe it's just me. lol.

khoriatybboy: you got any clips of your TMW? cos i'd like to see more clips of TMWs...

yeah kazaa was where i got the same clip...
and later i got myself a copy of Breakin'.

i can just keep watchin Shrimp do it, i can just keep replaying the clip, but i just cant seem to understand where his weight is, how he does it so effortlessly... haha..

oh and, Poppin Smurf, you're talking about AF1 lo's right?
cos i own a pair of AF1 mids and i just can't dance well in them.
i mean, sure, i can dance, but not with gliding and all.. the shoe just doesnt respond to my heel-toe movements well. kinda like wearing a block. =X

yeah af1low cuts!!

ahhhh u got my movie good stuff!!!!!!
get breakin 2 and beat street!!!!

oh n wild style !!!!!

but other wise i think wen shrimp does it he disregards his weight coz thats wat i do u kno wen ur first learnin 2 glide u think its all bout ur whole foot and u glide the whole foot which causes friction and the glide looks shyt!!!! wen u then find out bout heel toe u feel lite!! thats wat i do jus take ur heel toe 2 the next level!!

look at him talkin like he's an expert!!! ha ha oh keep it real!!

Personally, I think Shrimp's version of a true moonwalk is a very high standard to hold your own to, if not the highest (not that that's a bad thing). Just realize, he's had been doing this stuff for years. So I'm guessing, as long as you keep at it, it'll come around with time and patience. One of the main things i noticed is that Shrimp has an insane ability to balance completely on his tiptoes (download the "guest performance shrimp in japan" clip if you wnat to see). I imagine he gets alot of that effect by pushing completely off his tiptoes rather than how I, at least, sort of push off from the flat part of my toes.
