First off, you want something catchy, but probably more importantly, it has to capture the essence of the song's vision and direction. Link it to your verses, but simplify it to the essence.. the verse is where you're laying down your complex thoughts and expanding on your ideas while the hook is there to drum the message into their thick skulls, lol, in a cool way to keep them interested.

it's really hard to tell you how to write a hook.. cuz it depends from track to track.. but you should try to write the hook first.. or at least get an idea for a hook first... cuz you should fit ya verses to the hook... i dunno, i always write the hook first... for me it's easier that way... but there ain't really any tricks to it, u either got it or u don't... there's jus so many ways to do hooks that it's impossible to tell u how to write a hook... but like Sub said, the hook should be the main message of the song.. and the verses should be the extention and explanation... but a tip to makin a hook sound nicer, or stand out more when ur recording it is:

record the hook twice, make sure it sounds exactly the same and is timed the same.. then pan one to the right an one to the left... not all the way tho... like the middle of the right, and middle of left.... it depends on the hook, an ya shouldn't always do this, but usually adds a nicec touch... if ya don't get wut i'm sayin jus PM or hit me up on MSN and i'll explain it better...

peace.

do the songs have titles/themes that you could title them with?

if u get desparate you could have like say the songs called the danger zone

you could have the hook be like

thThThThe danger zone.. danger zone. da da da danger danger zone.

haha never mind. just get a dj to scratch some words together sayin the title of the song,
only if your desparate i'd say though

I think you got two kinds of basic hook.

There's repeatative stylie; mainly instrumental perhaps with one line repeated like a lot of stuff by Gangstarr or Cypress Hill. That really drums a message in and gives the song identity makes it catchy y'know. This is kinda like what MuffinJuice was suggesting before.

Then if you look at J5 or Dilated Peoples and shit theres the other kind where the hook is more like a repeated verse section like say 4 bars or something. This is nice if you can pull it off but I'd say harder to write.

And what Awe said about overlays - always helpful if you wanna give the chorus more depth so it kinda stands out more. A lot of the shit you'll hear on CDs is done like that.

Hope this shit helps in any way. Peace.
