They way I started out was jus with poetry....but a lot of people'd have done it differently. I was always pretty decent with poetry and such, so I jus practiced making rhyming sentences.....then I moved onto rhyming sentences with the same no. of syllables in 'em....and soon after, I started piecin' in some beats to the words, which jus came naturally from listening to other rappers.....soon enough, with some practice, you'll be able to hear a beat, and put some words to it.....

Ah yea, a good site for beginner emcees would probably be something like www.rhymezone.com . I used it quite a bit when I jus started....but remember, you don't wanna become dependant on a book or website....so use it in decreasing amounts, as you improve.

Peace, and keep doin' your thing.

Edit: This's jus the way "I" started out....I didn't intend on practicing freestyling or anything like that, so it's a pretty pointless way to do it, so if someone else tells you otherwise, you listen to 'em.

When some one's throwin' punches, it won't make a difference whether or not you can windmill, or hit a clean tutting angle.

I don't know.......personally, I had written a couple of rhymes back in the day but for me, I just pretty much started by ridin around in my homies cars drikin 32s of bud light with beats bumpin, takin turns droppin wack freestlyes lol. After a while I came across this site. Wrote a bunch of weak verses here. Kept writing. Kept freestyling. And now I can do both pretty well.

I dunno, I think it's good to learn to freestyle when you first start writin. I think it's good to get the feel of freestylin, spittin straight from the dome right at the beginning. Otherwise you might end up bein the cat in the cypher droppin hella pre written rhymes* Plus free'n (when you start realizin that freestylin is all about letting you mind go blank and just lettin the words flow out) can help give you lots of new ideas for new flow. New rhythm. New rhyme patterns.

That's what I think...........but any path you take, I guarantee the constant key to getting good is practice, period.

Keep spittin, writin, and elevatin

Peace

*Please don't ever be that cat......that's straight up false advertising your skill........

almost every site I've seen that deals with the stuff like what we have in this forum usually has something like a '101 thread.' Some even have forums dedicated to it. Though reading may not be the most appealing thing, READ those things.

I seemed to have generally decent lyrics starting out and flow came afterwards for me. But honestly, if you're lyrics are mediocre and you can flow, it will sound really nice. If you have nice lyrics and mess up the flow, then it will take away from everything. Try different beats and see what works..
