Hey. I got a question about footwork on beat. Let's say if you are doing a six step for example. For a beginner, would you want to step on each snare, or something like 180 Degree rotation every snare or what. This part is kind of confusing me. Mainly what I'm asking is what is your personal preferance?
( I realize that it matters about bpm, but still. I need a some kind of push in the right direction) |

The general consensus is that the 3rd and the 6th step should land on the snare. Thats at the most basic and beginner level tho! As you get better, you'll realize that you can go a lot faster and still be on beat. Instead of followin the main beat u can track the high hat...which is a lot faster. If you don't know...the high hat is that "tick tick tick tick tick tick" u hear in the background of the song. Its constantly goin. Once u get better you can do each step on the high hat...or once u get real good...2 steps per high hat. Does that help any? For now stick with the basic level...but also practice jus goin wit the general flow of the song. Trust your body to find a good rhythm!

Yeah thanks that helps alot. I know alot about music, not movement to the peices of a song. But yeah, so I assume that in like a 3 step, for the most basic, you would land on the last step on each snare. Correct?

what about doing footwork on your fingertips?
i've tried it. your body is much faster, especially if you lean your weight forward. but proper conditioning is needed for your fingers. thoughts? |

ummm the height gained from going up on to fingertips from raised palms... i dunno if its really worth it... I mean when you get good, youre either gonna have weight on your hands or not, so like theres not much point having your hands on the ground when they cant take any weight.
I dunno, i'm pretty buzzed right now... So I'm not sure if thats like... sense making. |

Well thats the thang..it does require a lot of conditioning! Thanks for the props by the way...now im leavin it up to the rest of the community to keep this goin. I"ll always be checkin in here for updates and whatnot
. Ringer i get wut ur sayin. I don't really care about the height factor too much...its the speed and overall cleanness of the whole thang. It looks dope, but again carries high chance of injury. I'm gonna still play around wit it...i'm really curious to see what a fine-tuned product wuld look like! No one sprained anythang doin it yet did they?? |

Nice Guide. The part about body extension and doing drills helped me. On the Style Vs. Technique discussion I think you should'nt learn style before technique. I mean doesn't a six step with the arm on the hip or head still look terrible with sagging hips or slow footwork? I think it might be best to work on your technique and meanwhile if you come up with a random stylish move practice it. practice your technique with your style. Otherwise technique before style. But that's just me.

^^^Word...style and tech works best for me...i find jus practicin tech alone to be boring...cuz honestly...either way its gonna look like crap. Might as well throw sumthin of urs in there too.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12 steps, ccs, shuffle, apple jack, pompos
is there any other footwork beside these? or after mastering all of these i'll invent my own footwork? |
