Flare shiznit - 03-30-2006, 11:43 PM

So I'm back from bboying class, and my teacher says to lead with your ankles in flares and keep your hips in one spot. Also he said to try to keep my ass lower since I make them go like 50 cm off the ground ... I thought you were supposed to try to get your ass as high as possible and move your hips hula hoops style as anubis said ... Any ideas?

Sounds like bad advice, but it's quite hard to judge your teachers recommendatios, when i haven't seen your flare attempts.. clip maybe?..
Else I guess it all depends on how good your teacher is.. can he do good flares? if his flares are good he probably knows what he's talking about.. If his flares are slow, low and he's getting around on 80% strength, you probably shouldn't listen to his advice on flares... if that's the case, choose to learn something else from your teacher that he's good at, and find someone else who's capable of doing nice flares to teach it to you... (yeah i know it can be quite hard to find breakdance teachers some places - learning by watching videoes and reading about it combined with learning by doing will often do the trick as well - all though it's a lot harder and takes more dedication)

if you make them go 50 cm off the ground at this point, you're probably jumping into them

No actually I start still, with my legs apart and my left bent a little and my right hand shoulder width from my left foot. I sweep my right leg back in a circle and kick left leg up, then I kick right leg around and up.

jumping into flares into actually JUMPING and then going into flares. it is a common mistake that many people who are just starting to flare do. they think they're going far, but its only that their ass is flying far since they're screwing up their leg motions. the result is a "jump" and your ass flying long horizontally. this applies to standing still position too

you could go from pushup position, from mill to flare, from airflare to flare, and probably more

watch a video of lazy legs and you can do that except with flares
