Some questions about flares -

I've been practicing flares for about a week now. Right now I can get my legs to the v shape and then to my left side. I am wondering if flexibility is necessary to do a flare. My V shape only forms a 90 degrees or less. Also I want to know what stretches should be done before practicing flares. Even though I stretch I still pull some muscles so I have to wait till the next day to try again cuz it hurts so bad.
