Cool RingerINC's uber guide for n00bs on ice -- now with videos -- now with extra pizzaz - 10-26-2006, 04:22 AM

[Note from Ringer: This guide's been up, largely unedited for over 2 years... So sorry about the dead links and so forth, other mods can feel free to edit this and remove/replace links. And in the comments feel free to suggest other guides for inclusion... But i doubt I'll be editing this any time soon, so sorry for the poor maintainence.]

Yes, extra pizzaz... You didn't go blind after reading the first few amazing words and start making up extra words to fill up the gaps that you couldn't read anymore.

Wow.

Anyways, on to the guide. Mainly because "where do i begin?" gets asked to hell and back and people love visual aids... Not the HIV kind.

Before you read the guide, you might wanna browse over this, this, this and this.

Guide Preface

Now, for the sake of structure and ease of access this guide was designed under "move type" headings. This by no means implies that you should learn everything contained under toprock before moving on to footwork and so on and so forth. I advise mixing up learning different parts from different headings. Now this being said, some of the guides contained in later sections should in fact be learnt after learning most of the basics, for example the routine guides should really only be learnt after learning most of the things contained under earlier headings.

Also, later on I will be adding in "order of learning" into different sub-headings to assist you with a good way to progress through the guide.

Also, if you are literally just beginning to learn to bboy, my advice for what to learn first under each of the headings is:

Toprock (Cross step/Indian Step/Basic Toprock) + Footwork (6-Step) + Drop (Knee Drop) + Freeze (Baby Freeze) + Other (Backspin [Because everyone likes to spin, as it is fun... Seriously])

Also, a nice little video can be found here. This is a great place to see how moves should look when performed well. So check here before looking at the guides and utilise some variations that zeshen shows in the clip.

Also it is a good idea to keep in mind that this guide in no way can act as a proper substitute for being taught by others. So the best piece of advice i can give you if you really want to learn how to bboy (and not be some kid who can do the six step) is to find your scene as soon as possible. Heaps of people assume that there arent any bboys near them, but most of the time there is a huge scene that they just aren't aware of.

And Finally, all jokes within the guide are designed to keep you interested and remind you that bboying is about fun, not to offend you... you little bitch made punk... God grow the fuck up... What? What? You gonna go cry to your mommy now? Yeah that's right, walk away you little douchebag... Yeah...

If you can't deal with that kind of rigorous insulting, then please shield your eyes, scroll down and rapidly click on as many links as possible whilst reading as little as possible.

Have Fun

THE GUIDE!

So this is what you are asking:

"Ringer, where do I start, I beseech your amazing knowledge?"

Well I will bless you with the answer:

Toprock

Ok... time to elaborate.

This is what you would call "the bit where you're standing up"

The forum link is here

Ask any questions that you may have in their regarding toprock.

The most basic toprock is the cross-step, a video guide is contained here

Markos' guide to toprock, containing 4 basic styles, very helpful

BBoy Lemons 3 styles of toprock, very helpful

Diesels different 3 styles of toprock

Omg another text guide

Another guide to toprock... He calls it uprock... But it's toprock

Another video toprock guide containing instructions on 2 styles, plenty of video footage and a few overall tips.

To expand toprock, you can add a little uprock... Which you can google yourself for a definition... geeze, get the hell off my back man...

Also there is a sample of the Zulu Gremlin Master Class Clip

Ok, our forum already contains many elaborate text guides to help you with this side of Bboying. This is AlphaTrion's guide covering many different styles. Read up on some if you want to add variety

Bboy dragon is also currently working on a set of toprock guides

Also, if you want to check how you look, put the steps to music and dance in front of a mirror. Check yourself out... In a non-wierd way... or even better, record yourself and post up a video in the toprock section. Ask people to rate it and work on improving from their advice.

Once you have some kind of skill in toprock, you can move on to the basics of footwork... No you don't have to live in Chicago to do footwork.

Footwork

This is what you would call "the bit where you're running on the ground"... It has also been reffered to as "spazz dancing" (Thank You highwind331).

The forum is located here.

The best place to start with this is the 6-step:

This guide contains both a text guide and a video guide.

another 6-step guide... they're everywhere

Another one thanks to jerseyguy

Remember this is only the most basic of "Steps" and can be added two with many variations:

The 12-step

I think this is a 12-step clip... maybe

Combining 12-step with 6-step (he called it adding steps)

7-Step -- found the guide:

This one contains 4, 5 and 7 step, also contains a guide on switches and baby freeze. If you've learnt the 6-step this is a very good guide to look at.

5-step -- Ok this one is basically the 6-step, except (starting from pushup) you merge steps one and two, so you jump into it with your left leg extended and the right leg tucked up (CCW). for video see above.

5-step guide, form contained in video segment is of a pretty low level

Guide on 5-step and a non-standard 4-step (just variations on 6-step)

The 4-step -- see above

The 3-step

The 2-step

The 1-step/coffee grinder/helicopter/the one all the non-bboys can do

Another 1 step guide -- with video

The front 1-step

The reverse 1-step

This one has links to other various techniques beyond the 6-step

Man Of Confiden's Tips For Footwork. A good read after you have learnt the basic steps that will help you clean them up.

Ok so now you're sitting there with all your footwork and you look at me like

"what do i do with this?"

And I'm all like

"Play around with it fool."

In heinsight i probably should have told you to mix it up and try combining some steps together. But only do this once you have the basic 6-step down.

Once again it helps alot if you record yourself and then post it up in the allocated forum, asking for tips and help.

So now onto the next step: Drops

Drops

So you're looking at me right, and you're all like

"How the hell do i get from toprock to footwork"

And then I'm all like

"Drops stupid"

The allocated forum about drops is here

So i personally believe the easiest drop is the knee drop.

Kt's knee drop video guide... Dunno why it isn't a sticky... But whatever

To add a little flair to this drop i would recommend first learning how to thread

with Jeopardy's Air Thread Guide -- should be a sticky.

And then learning the thread drop with 13yrbboy's guide

(Note, this is basically an air thread and then a knee drop.)

Another drop that is relatively simple is the sweep drop... But you probably wont need that any time soon. Anyways, no real good guides for it on this website... But there are like 2 second clips

Here

and here

There are many other drops... but they're not really suitable for the purpose of getting from toprock to footwork.

So now that you've linked your toprock to your footwork you're going to want to add that little bit of 'cool'. To your routine

"How do i do that Ringer"

Bitch you better shut the fuck up when I'm talking...

I mean... With freezes... Of course...

Freezes

The allocated forum for Freezes is here

Ok there are a few basic freezes that are easy to combine with footwork in a glorious display of awesome...ness...age...

Ok the most basic of freezes is considered to be the baby freeze.

It looks a little something like this

Ok now for a basic guide to do it. My personal favourite guide on it is not on this website:

It's here

Also, Peep Dragons guide

(god, im linking 13 year olds...)

Also, along with the baby freeze there are many other basic freezes:(OMG check out D.n.A's sexy freezeness)

For a guide covering the first 3 along with the baby freeze: look no further than here

Also it is on this website... here
(I'm so smart)

Also, the beginning of D.n.A's guide covers the handglide and turtle well

And the beginning of Cliche's guide covers the chair freeze quite well

"But Ringer, how do i get from footwork to my super sexy freezes?"

Well let me show you young child...

Transitions/Routines

Ok the allocated forum for Transitions/Routines is here

So go put up videos and ask for extra help there on this one.

One awesome guide for transitions between basic 6-step and freezes is:

D.n.A's ~IMPORTANT Transitions Guide~

another one he wanted me to add: ~IMPORTANT Transitions Guide~

(Note: It's uber sexylicious... In a non-gay way.)

Other Things To Work On

Once you have made a fair dent in the basics, you may want to learn some new moves to "show off" or "be cool" or "whatever"... yeah...

i dunno if he teaches well or anything, mainly because i can't waste bandwidth on something I'm not gonna use... BUT YOU CAN. I'm pretty sure it contains some extra stuff and some of the things contained in this guide.

Here are some things to work on:

Handstands, kinda important if you want to learn hollowbacks, 1990s, 2000's etc.

The allocated forum is here.

Handstand guide

Another guide here

Another text handstand guide/handhops

Headstands

These are often an integral part of a routine. They can be used as a starting point for headpins and also can be used a lot in freeze transitions (Check out Bboy Sonic). There aren't any guides up in this bitch, but there are a fair few on other sites.

Headstand to headspin guide, only read the bit about headstands and fear of falling

Kicks

No I'm not talking about shoes. Idiot...

These can look impressive and are relatively easy to learn if you can hold 1-handed handstand somewhat. I'm not talking for like 10 seconds here, basically if you can go into a one handed handstand using one hand these shouldn't be too hard.

Allocated forum for Kicks is here

L-kick/nike guide -- this one is very good for beginners

Once you have L-kicks down pikes aren't that much harder... But learn to L-kick/nike first

Floats and Spins

The allocated forum for floats is here and spins is here.

Backspin

Another, possibly better backspin

There was another backspin guide on bboyzone, that was video... It was the bestest, but now it is gone *tear*

Kneespin -- Basically spinnin in a kneeling position... Looks pretty cool sometimes. You can do it on one knee or two... I do it on one... Victory.

Also, refer to D.n.A's guide:

Floats FAQ

Handglide

More handglidification

Turtle

More turtleage

Even more turtlage

How to pump (once you have learnt some basic floats, learning how to pump will assist you in learning the more advanced floats that often require pumping)

Kip Up's and Rubber Bands

These help when you fuck up, seriously... If you crash a set you can just get up and make it look like it was on purpose... Not that I've ever done that... Because I'm awesome...

*evade*

Anyways, the allocated forum for this is here

The guide for begginers for kip ups is here

Other Freezes

There are plenty other basic freezes that are basic variations of the handstand or fundamental freezes. For the most part you can invent your own types of these freezes, but here are a few basic ones that can help you get started.

Ground freezes

Getting into that ground freeze from 6-step

Air freezes

Airbaby

Omg what happened to justdooit's airbaby guide? that was the shiz.

some random freezes

Basic Power

Swipes are probably the easiest of power alongside the advanced floats and windmill (check the end for guides on windmill).

The allocated forum for swipes is here

There are a fair few types of swipes and i can get some guides on only a few.

Two legged swipes guide

One legged swipe guide

Master swipes video guide, also contains some other swipes

BBoy No-no's/Shit you should avoid like the plague

Ok, there isn't a forum on this... Because that's retarded.

Are you retarded?

Anyways, there are several things that a BBoy should not do that are pretty obvious and some that you might not have thought of.

For starters, watch any video with Lilou in it, don't do any of that shit. (He is such a tool that is so freaking awesome... DAMN YOU LILOU)

Here is a basic list of things to not do:
  • Biting (basically stealing sets or unique moves from others. Remember, especially with the routines section that you can practice with those, but do not just use them exactly, add a little of 'you' into everything you do)
  • Being a tool/asshole (This one speaks for itself)
  • Touching (not in your homosexual way, but physical contact in Bboy battles or the pseudo-battles that you will be having is discouraged. Don't push or shove or kick (ahhh Lilou) your opponent, especially when they're bigger than you or doing something that's high risk)
  • Rubbing it in (Similar to being a tool, if it's clear that you have won a battle, don't go out there and humiliate the person. Just shake hands and tell them it was a good battle, no one likes a show-off)

And remember, every battle is about improving yourself, so it doesn't matter whether you win or lose or who the crowd liked better, it's about you improving yourself and the skills you have. So don't get all dissapointed and shit when you lose a battle or crash a set or look like a spastic on the dance floor. Just acknowledge that you screwed up and keep on practicing and improving.

How To B A B-Boy

Man Check out that heading, B a Bboy... god I am amazing at this shit.

Moving on...

Despite what you may think, you don't have to get all gangsta to be a part of the hip-hop culture. Bboys are all around the world and all parts of different cultures. Big clocks hanging from necklaces and giant chains are not required whilst bboying.

Also, around the forum many questions get asked about certain aspects of bboying that do not relate specifically to the actual dance, like "what should i wear?" or "how should i act?" and stuff like that, so remember to do a search if you're gonna try and be the millionth dude to ask what shoes are good. So below are a few things that might answer some of your questions.

What do i wear?
Basically, anything that's comfortable for you while you're dancing. After a few sessions either by yourself or with a group you should work out whether or not your attire is well suited for breaking in. As a general rule, moderately loose clothes are better than tight clothes for breaking. Any kind of baggy pants are cool as long as they don't inhibit your movements. Also, any kind of hard objects on your clothes are not good. Try to avoid wearing belts with big buckles or, if you can, don't wear belts at all. Shirts with badges and buttons and shit are less of a problem, but also can be annoying and pointy, so hence wear a plain t-shirt if possible. Also, chains on jeans can get in the way, so take them off pre-practice... And Jeans in general often feel heavy and stick to you after a short while training, often resulting in movements being inhibited.

What about shoes?
Any kind of light cross-trainer or whatever shoe is cool. Remember, if you're gonna go to clubs or dances or whatever think about what kind of shoe you would wear there and try and get a shoe that is good for breaking in but can also be worn out. Breaking barefoot at home and stuff is ok for some stuff, but remember if you're dancing in public you're gonna be wearing shoes, so practicing in shoes is advisable. For more detailed answers just do a search of the forums as many people highlight specific shoe models that they prefer to use.

I'm nervous/scared/being a little bitch about dancing in front of others
That's not really a question but an abbreviated version of gay things new people say. For starters, if you're doing it to impress others, then you fucked up somewhere along the way... because you should be getting amped to show people. But otherwise, if you really wanna dance in a circle but you bitch out, tell someone to make you do it, like get them to push you in and shit.

After re-reading this it sounds pretty angry... Some simple advice on the subject would be to try and stay calm whenever you're about to enter the circle and focus on the music. Remember, that eventually you're gonna have to bboy in public, so you should try and get used to it early. Practicing in a group is a great way to start this, training with bboys that are better than you often can show you how most dancers are willing to help and are always trying to be positive about others dancing. This should help you get over your fear of looking stupid as you get used to it early. And remember, it's always about having fun and getting better, so don't ignore other peoples criticism, unless its just stupid like "you need to spin more"... or "you need to get better"... Then just backhand some people and be like "You need to get hurt better."

What's A BBoy Persona?
Basically this is how you act when you dance. If you watch some videos on youtube or go to any event, you'll see how clearly many people have different attitudes that exemplify the way they dance. This attitude is usually fairly different to how the person regularly acts... I mean we all don't go jumping around the street laughing at people... or staring people down and stuff. But in a general sense, your own persona should reflect your normal attitude, just amplified 2000 fold. If you're a bit of a joker then don't be afraid to show it in your dance, if someone gets all serious on you, just laugh at them or play along in like a patronising way. If you're more of a serious person then feel free to get all vicious on people, gesture hard, make people feel like they're going down.

Personas can extend in many different ways and be completely different from person to person. You should be able to find your own persona when you start actually dancing using the bboying steps that you learn.

Getting In Shape

Forum allocated to this is here

General training guides are here, here and here (w00t fukaihoton).

Also, don't think that you need to be some amazingly buff bodybuilder to be a bboy, the strength that you need will often come from simply practicing. These guides act to supplement this strength and help you with moves that require more strength than normal. Remember, alot of the time it's about balance and technique, so make sure you have it in those sections before you rush off to the gym.

Also, in learning certain moves the splits are helpful or required. So here's dragons guide to the splits

OMG I DIDN'T FORGET THE FAQ

What the hell is up with this guide?

Not the best way to start...

"RingerINC I want to learn the thing where you spin on the floor"

"You mean the windmill"

"OMG YEAH THATS THE ONE!!!!111 OMG OMG OGMGGOGMG!!!111oneoneoneeleven"

*punt*

(Alternate response)

"NO ONE LOVES YOU"

(Alternate response)

"You should probably learn the basics first you freaking retard" (Based on the life work of Slimmy)

"Hey Ringer, i can't dance. Can I Bboy?"

"Well technically Bboying is a dance... so no... But you can dance, because everyone can dance. Seriously though, with time your uncoordinated, spazmodic movements will become more fluent and on beat, just keep practicing"

"So my friend said XYZ. But everyone on this forum said QRS"

"Your friend is retarded. Get better friends"

"Do you have special shoes/pants/hat/clothes/house?"

"No, buy a clue"

"This part of my body is hurting" *points*

"For starters, i can't see you pointing, we're on the internet. Also, don't do anything with what ever your pointing at, it could get worse. Best advice, leave it for a day or two, if it doesn't get better, see a doc."

"But Ringer, where do i go once I've learn't all this?"

"Ok, trust me, if you learn EVERYTHING on there it'll take ages, by then you'll have worked out what you want to do. I'm not your fucking mother man, do what you want.

Also, you might wanna not do everything on that list and go straight to something like the windmill... Now I'm cool with that, and that guy is cool with that..."

"hey" -- other guy

"But alot of other people aren't cool with not learning the basics first. So it's cool to skip some stuff that you don't like/would never use, but it is still advisable to make a significant dent in the stuff contained in here before going straight to power moves"

"But seriously, i want to learn the windmill right now"

"Ok fine, but the things you should learn to do before that are:
Learning all that will not only provide you with some basics to show off to your friends with, but a solid foundation in the windmill and generating the momentum to get it right.

Also since i know you love guides (note: guides are male, so you are gay. VICTORY!!!) there are like a fucking million on the internet and I aint trawling through that shit man. I'm just gonna link you the fuck up

There, you happy now?"

"I am"

"Shutup fool, you were a one time joke"

"Quit swearing at me."

"Not a question. fucktard"

"Besides that last one no one ever asks you anything directly do they?"

"... You are so banned."

Shout-Outs

A big thanks to all the great bboys who have made (and those that will make) guides for this website and other online resources. You're keeping this community thriving and spreading our art... And without you guys this guide wouldn't be here... and where the hell would that leave me?

Thanks to all those who have read, are reading or are learning from this guide. Especially to those who have commented here, every suggestion and thanks is appreciated more than you think.

Thanks to all those who have recommended or sigged this guide, it's good to know that such great bboys think highly of what i've made.

Thanks to man of confiden, for reminding me that i need to work on this guide... ugh... And for your support of this guide.

I think that was me. It came from the fact that I used a lot of 2 steps and 1 steps in my footwork so I bounced around a lot more than I should(my footwork is better now. No More Spasms!).

But good guide. You covered most of the basics. Probably might want to add some stuff about "bboy-no-nos" like biting or being an asshole, but it's up to you. I wish I had a guide like this though. Though I really wonder how many noobs are really going to read this. So far every post has been from someone who's been bboying for at least a month.
