practicin your breakin will give you the strength you need, otherwise you can do various kinds of push ups. Normal ones, handstand ones against a wall, push ups with your legs raised above the horizontal, resting on a table or something. Try that.
Use linoleum, you can get it in rolls from kitchen stores. I like to tape it down onto carpet gives a smooth good surface, but also a softer landing as opposed to hard wood floors, or cardboard.
