Just starting -

Hi,
Well at 30 yrs old, I finally decided to get my ass in gear before it's too late. When I was a kid, i first saw dancing on the movie 'breakdance' in 1984! I instantly loved it, and thought that that was what I wanted to do when I was 'older'. I got into other things (martial arts) though and time went quick (too quick). As I had an older brother I started clubbing at an early age (14) and got into the beer, drinking and partying. I quit martial arts, and became lazy. Fast forward to some 14 years ago when I used to go to the local club (at 16) and see a few of the guys doing some moves, I always wished that I could do it, I wanted to try, but as a teenager, now I wasn't the most active. I'd given up previous exercise for booze and late nights, I had poor balance, wasn't very fit at all, and generally was rubbish at anything I tried physical, I was also worried about making a fool of myself (my older brother by 6 years was a bit of an ass, and was always putting me down so I didn't have a lot of confidence at the time). Before long, time passed quickly again, then work and other comitments got in the way as well and I concentrated on making a living, until around 6 years ago when I decided to try and get into shape, I started boxing which was good for a while, but after a wrist injury I had to quit after 2 years. After that I decided to hit the gym, which lasted for another couple of years but I had to take it easy-ish because of my wrist. That lasted until my best friend died, and things got a little low after that and I became lazy and lethargic again, shutting myself away from everyone for the following year eating crap, getting unfit and putting on some fat. That took me up to last summer, where I decided to try and get back on track and actually start doing things that I wanted to do and had never done. But I needed to get in shape first, something I had been trying to do for a long time. I lost a few pounds to start but concentrated on strength building and balance, then this year I shed the fat that had been building up, sorted my diet and went from 14.5 stone to 12.5 (I'm 6ft 2 so ideal weight now thankfully) within a month, I then kept going with my regime until last week, when I thought that now was the time to make my move before it's too late. Anyway, that brings me up to now, I've always loved breakbeat, hiphop and funk, and I've always admired people who bboy, it's time for me to stop dreaming and start living. Over the past week, I've been working on the indian step or little indian top rock, along with a few others, have made good progress on my six step and last night I tried doing my first freeze, on my third attempt I managed to get up in the air, but just need to get some ideas going and to play around with making it look more stylish tonight (pic is my avatar, coments and ideas appreciated). Anyway, so here I am. 30 years old, how time flies, I've got no experience, and I don't care what people think anymore I'm going to try. I'm fitter now then I was at 16, and hopefully, if my bad wrist holds out, I'm going to give it all I can. Anyway, hello to everyone, and I hope to hang here if thats cool. Going to check out some of the guides along the way that have been posted up too, so thanks for that, see you around. Cheers, |

yeah good luck and dont forget to have fun^^ be careful with your wrist. there will be times it will hurt. when that happens you should give it a rest and practice other things like toprock while it heals.

I don't look at other dancers as idols, I look at them as opponents.
When I see someone do something dope on the floor, I don't go screaming like a little girl, I try to do something even better. -A guy from bboyworld.com |

Thanks for all the positive comments and advice guys, it's appreciated.
I'm having fun and finding it really addictive, even though I can't do a lot at the moment, just going to try and practice as much as I can. I'm going to try to get a few top rocks down good, and make sure I can blend them together, then practice my drops into six / three step into a freeze. Once I've got that smooth I'm going to move on to try other things. But for now, I need to just keep practicing those things over until I get them really good, then I can always add things on later and try new moves. The day I get my first power move down is going to be like Christmas, but that's a way off yet ![]() Cheers, |

Haven't read the replies so its possible someone mentioned it, but be very careful on that wrist you injured, b-boying is really rough on the wrists when you first start
Haha and i forgot to say; welcome to the community! It's all about having fun, i remember seeing on planet bboy some 60 year old grandma b-boying so dw you're never to old to start |

Lol I gotta have a look on Youtube for that.
Re the wrist, it can still give me trouble if it gets a hard impact, I tried doing some bag work the other week to test it (as I thought it would have healed by now) but I still got the sharp pain going through the side of my wrist and down my arm, but the constant dull ache and clicking isn't there anymore thankfully and hasn't been for a while now. It's been aching the past few days, but I have been practicing on it every night. Took it a little easier last night and I'm going to give it a rest tonight and work on my toprock. I picked up one of those powerballs actually to try the other day. I have noticed after or before a practice it seems to loosen up my wrists a lot which is good. I think part of the problem is that with my previous exercise routines I haven't isolated the wrists, so it's probably healed but needs strengthening, fingers X'd. |
