The news of the recent suicide of a young B-Boy dancer has left Koreans in disbelief and shock. The dancer, identified only by his last name, Yang, was discovered by his cousin and member of ‘Last for One’ in his apartment in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul, on June 16. According to news reports, the dancer had hung himself with a belt.

What was most shocking about the news was that the suicide had been filmed with the dancer’ very own cell-phone camera, which he had set up just before hanging himself in the bathroom. The mobile phone was later discovered by the police who speculated that Yang had attempted to take his own life on previous occasions, even just one day before he was discovered dead. According to the police and friends of Yang, dancer had what appeared to be a scratch mark around his neck.

Friends and fellow dancers have testified that Yang had gone through bouts of depression after discovering that his dance career was over due to a serious knee injury six months ago. Following the injury, Yang left ‘LastMass’, which he had been a part of for three years. Friends say he had even considered going back to school.

The police say that Yang’s depression may have worsened in recent days after watching his fellow dance mates compete overseas in various international dance competitions.

Yang had been a member of a B-Boy group called ‘LastMass’, a junior team of ‘Last for One’, Korea’s top B-Boy group which has won numerous competitions since 1998 including the 2005 Battle of the Year in held Germany. ‘Battle of the Year’ is one of the biggest B-Boy competitions in the world. ‘Last for One’ has also made numerous media appearances on popular TV shows and TV ad campaigns. Late last year, the group members were cast in an original dance musical entitled ‘Spin Odyssey’.

‘LastMass’, the junior group of ‘Last for One’ has also been widely acknowledged for its talent. ‘LastMass’ was even invited to perform at the 2008 EUFA European Football Championship currently taking place in Switzerland.

Foul play? Apparently the suicide was recorded on his cell so I doubt it is. Must have been some personal problems that haunted him and coerced him into doing so. Its always sad when someone good dies. RIP.
