Jay Z Named In $5 Billion Reparations Lawsuit

Hip Hop mogul Jay Z may not be having as great a year as many would assume.

The Grammy winner, along with real estate developer Bruce Ratner and Barclays Bank, has just been slammed with a whopping $5 billion dollar lawsuit from Clive Campbell, NOT DJ Kool Herc.

According to the New York Observer, Jay Z, Ratner, and Barclays Bank are all part of the $4 billion Atlantic Yards Project in Brooklyn, New York.

Bruce Ratner has his sights on building a basketball arena for Jay Z's Nets and more than 6,000 apartments in downtown Brooklyn.

Barclays Bank owns the naming rights to the arena, and has been accused of having links with the slave trade—an accusation the bank denies.

According to the suit, Campbell is seeking $5 billion for slavery reparations claiming Ratner and Jay-Z worked “in concert” with Barclays, and “profited from the African Slave Trade and continue to profit from these gains, through a conspiracy dating back hundreds of years and continue to date to oppress Black people, enslave them, unlawfully deport them to all corners of the Earth.”

No statement from Jay's camp has been released.

either that, or he's doing this as a symbolic lawsuit. i don't think he intends to win but apparently he's doing this for symbolic reasons... not quite sure EXACTLY what he intends to accomplish but thats what i got from this.

why does him associating with the bank means he should be screwed out of money. surely some sort of proof that he had anything to do with the slave trade would need to be present?

I cant really form an opinion on this, since I dont know all the facts, but considering Cool Herc did so much for the Black Community in the early days of Hip Hop, Im not going to say hes being greedy and self centered, if not a bit fanatical, as I would most people in this situation. It does seem its more of symbolic lawsuit, and if the accusations of slavery are true, then the building of a multi billion dollar area off of dirty money, in a primarily black area, should be brought to a halt.
