Lil bit of help - 09-30-2007, 01:53 AM

Hey wassup this is Jan. I haven't been on this site in about a year and i finally decided to commit to bboyin. I was just wonderin if i'm doin things right.

Right now---i'm a lil heavy (need to drop a few pounds)----should i wait to drop the weight or can i just go straight into bgirlin?

Until i get an answer for that, i'm practicing alil----I'm workin on the toprock and 6-step---how long do i practice for that each day? I'm thinkin 30 mins since i have college work and other stuff, but what is any of you other's opinions on this?

Help please

-Jan

Get to breakin! I'm sorry bboyin (cardinal sin around here apparently)

It's exellent cardio. Practically everyone I know lost weight from breaking (bboying, shit sorry). Be aware, especially if you carry a lot of weight on your hips, that your footwork may have a tendency to look a little heavy initially. Try your best to stay on your toes and not flat foot, that will help. Stay on top of your hips or, if you are behind them, really think about raising them, don't let them sag down. I see this a lot with bgirls and it really contributes to making them look heavy and slow. Damn lower center of gravity!

Personally I practice for however long I'm feeling it that day. Sometimes it'll be a few hours, others just 15 minutes. Just enjoy it and have fun with it; that's what keeps me coming back. As long as you have some consistency you should see improvments fairly quickly.

it's no problem calling it breaking... it's breakdancing, if you want to talk about that ordeal, heh.

and i agree about going into it. it is good exercise and does help you burn calories like mad. actually, with hips though, sometimes you'll mistake raising the butt (hips) with dropping them... in the sense of... if they're up on one side, the other side makes it look like you dropped 'em... so make sure when you come around, you don't stick your butt in the air (pushup position)... but all that is a tangent note to your original question.

key is also to get your practice organized at least in your head... what i mean is not just go, turn on music, and try a little this and a little that. drill it. drill your 6 step without too much speed... drill things to get 'em down and right.

cheerz.

Lol thanks, I was being a little facetious with the breaking thing Good point on the push position, hadn't thought of it from (literally) that perspective .

For drills --would you say to practice steps 1-3 until i get it down and then go on to 4-6? How long should i drill?

just toprock alot if you wanna loose weigth, you will loose it in no time. also ropeskipping is really good, it builds up for toprock, youll get more stamina and vigour get quicker and faster.

can't give a full answer at this time but i'll come back to it (at work and we're busy)... but just know that once you start dancing harder, you'll wanna eat more... which is good, b/c you need to fuel your metabolism or else your body will think you're starving yourself and hang on to everything... but you still need your calorie intake to be less than your burning to burn off the extra. don't jump anything dramatically, 'cause your body has this 'line' that it's used to... and if you wanna adjust it, you have to do it gradually, or else, once again, your body will think that you're either gorging or starving yourself (even if you're getting way too many calories and you drop it so you're getting significantly less, but still more than your body needs, it'll go off the line it was used to).

sorry... this is all jumbled, i'm trying to throw this out and get back to work!

Cheerz. I'll answer more later.

To summarize this your body is programmed to have a 'median weight' which is what your current weight is in most cases. If you burn more calories your body will expect an equal amount to replace them, however you should not increase food intake in the beginning, once your median weight starts changing you can better rely on the amount of food your body craves. Personally I think you can avoid cutting back on food in the beginning by drastically increasing your exercise (going from nothing to any form of regular routine is pretty drastic so don't try to kill yourself! Just get into a regular routine!) and burning more calories, as time progresses however you may desire to cut food intake if it is excessive, or if you are generally eating excessive quantities of unhealthy foods, but that's then, and this is now.

Step 1: Get workin'
