Angry When will they learn? - 01-02-2005, 02:51 PM

So after a long hiatus the chicks from Destiny's Child have reunited and this time the album is entitled: "Destiny's Fulfilled". But I have to ask, "Are they still children or have they grown up to be women yet? Apparently they are women, but I have to wonder about the depth of their maturity.

On their latest song "Soldier" they talk about wanting a man who's "status better be hood or ain't checking for him, Better be street if he looking at me, I need a soldier that ain't scared to stand up for me, he gotta know how to get the dough and he better be street."

Perhaps these sisters have never heard about what happens to chicks that get caught up with these types of characters. I don't think they've heard of the sisters that have caught cases because they were unknowingly holding guns and or drugs for one of these street soldiers. Have they heard the stories of the girls who just wanted a man with money, and didn't care how he got it? And how these same soldiers have enemies, real enemies, not some pretty boy actor with gold teeth and Roc a Wear gear, but real thugs, who shoot at cars and don't care who's driving it.

When I hear this song, it makes me stop and think about a girl I hung with in high school for a time, her name was Aileen, God forgive me but I can't remember her last name right now. Anyway, it was the mid 90's, and crack was all over like garbage on the street. Everywhere you looked you saw: This one on crack, that one selling crack. It was crazy. Girls at that time were crazy about guys that got their money that way. It was hard on a brother if he wasn't rolling like that back then.

Anyway, one day, while in Math Class this girl sits next to me and began a building a friendship. I called her, we chitchatted a bit, we went out together, hung out at school together. While I was hanging with her I got to know her and the impression I got, was that she had dated a bunch of drug dealers and wanted a different kind of guy. I also found out she had gotten accustomed to that type of lifestyle: the cars, the money, the jewelry, and etc. etc.

I didn't get down like that. I was raised to disdain drugs and to never corrupt our communities with that garbage. So, as cool as she was, we didn't hang out together anymore. It was one of the many times in my young life that I was really contemplating joining the dark side. I thought, hey I could have the money, the cars, the clothes and the jewels. But God would not let me go down that dark path. It was rough. But I got through it.

My friends who somehow or another knew this girl warned me to leave her alone. I'll never forget my girl Tina telling me, "Solataire leave that girl alone. She's no good."

I bumped into Aileen one night at a roller skating rink with one of these thug characters, we spoke, we were friendly. I had seen her man before, I knew who he was. For some reason, all of these years later, the last image I have of her in mind still stands out like the shining glitter ball that shot lights all over the roller rink that night. Her smile, it was so big and innocent for a girl that had been exposed to what she had been doing.

Not too long afterwards while talking with my brother and his girlfriend at the time, I mentioned Aileen's name to my brothers girl and she said, "Oh, she's dead". In shock I said, "No, can't be her." She ran down the description and I said "Yeah, that's her." To which my brother's girl said, "Yeah, she got shot in the head while driving her boyfriends car. She got shot and ran off the freeway into a ditch."

I was in a state of shock for weeks. In disbelief, one night I found her number and fought with myself as to whether I should call her house. I did. Her mother told me "She's dead" and hung up the phone.

Later I found out it was a case of mistaken identity. Her boyfriends enemies thought he was in the car with her that night, it didn't matter who was in the car, they knew that car and they had it in for him.

I ran into so many other girls just like Aileen over the years. Girls, who, for whatever reason were attracted to the gangster lifestyle, and in all honesty, were very naïve as to the consequences. The idea that they could do better was as foreign to them, as the Mandarin language. The connection between prisons, funeral homes and cemeteries and visits to Narcotics Anonymous never came together for them.

So, flash forward almost 10 years later, and here we have a platinum selling group of talented young sisters, and what are they feeding to young girls: Poison. Young girls need better guidance from grown women than that. A man, who, as Lil Wayne puts it, "Has a body marked up like a subway in Harlem" more likely than not, is not going to make a woman's life any better.

There are almost as many veterans incarcerated in prisons around our country than there are soldiers on the streets. If Destiny's Child has a destiny to be fulfilled, they are a long way off.

The mindless drivel that is spouted by these women in this song is shocking to say the least. Its a step backward. Women nowadays need to be stong, independent and intelligent. This song promotes none of these qualities. In fact I'd have to say it that promotes the exact opposite. When will the stars that our young people idolize become aware of the power of their position. Not only do we have to deal with the gross objectification of women in songs from R Kelly, Nelly, Petey Pablo and the like, now we also have to deal with a group of supposedly strong independent women teaching youth this shit?

what the hell is wrong with the world?

makes me mad

I really hate it too, makes me GRRR..... Everywhere you look the commercial world is taking backward steps towards women.

Youve got 50 cent pimpin his hoes, half naked women in every video clip, and groups like destinies child well, you just did a fine rant about them.

argh, its real bad, and it must be hard for girls growing up, not only because of this but because of all the fashion magazines and shit trying to brainwash them, and theres heaps of ugly stickwomen on TV nowadays and anorexia is becoming an epidemic.... ARGH... Lots of girls that ive talked to have all gone through stages of massive insecurity, lots have been through belemia, nearly all are very self conscious, they all seme to think males want skinny chicks... arghhhh... not true..... gimme angelina jolie over stick-woman miss universe anyday.... arghhh.. it gets me down.

Im glad im male.....sport and food.... not exactly brainwashing.

wow...... you're an idiot.

didnt you read the entire post? It makes some good points on why these things matter. Its teaching young kids that idolize these people the wrong values.

You're not very perceptive are you?

On a side note.. Good post Solataire.

thanx for the read poptart. it's refreshing to see somebody who can back up their opinions with personal experience and actual thought, i'm sorry to hear about your friend. i agree completely on the music front, as a musician my self it pains me to see artists acting so poorly when they have such an influence in somebodies life. whatever happened to the days of good, honest expression of your soul? again, thank you whole-heartedly for the read.

peace.

I feel you. I think it goes a lot further then just the idea of wanting a thug type of boyfriend though. Although the specifics of what you're speaking of I agree with 100 percent. To me a REAL soldier is a person who works to achieve their goals. Meaning working and/or going to school, making money legally to pay their bills and being independantly able to take care of themselves and/or their family. Aspiring soldiers would be the kids that see through all the propaganda and work hard to stay in school and help out their family, be a good kid stay off drugs and out of gangs and cliques etc.

You're not a soldier just cuz you carry a gun or push pills and powder. It's not hard to be a bad kid, it's not hard to screw up and get involved in gangs and sell drugs or be a pimp, hooker, or stripper. All that's easy. That's the cowards ways of making money. They can't handle the dedication and commitment involved in the nine to five life so they look to the quick and easy route. The sad part is they think they won't get caught up, they think they're strong enough to get out as quick as they got in if they get in over their head. Unfortunately most people get tangled up in that way of life and end up dead or in jail or constantly looking over their shoulder.

I think a big part of understanding these values has a lot to do with how you were brought up or how you perceived what was going on while you were brought up. Some people grow up developing an ability to read between the lines and analyze the plots and schemes society lays out, where as some kids grow up naive without the proper guidance or even just natural intuition. Some people adopt crazy mixed perceptions. I do agree kids need better rolemodels, but as for the music influencing and condoning these views, I think it only has a small amount to do with it. Music is powerful, but I think morals and values come from within and the people you choose to surround yourself with.

Unfortunately in the mainstream hip-hop/pop/RnB world.....sex, drugs and money is what sells a record. Thats a big part of why I fell in love with most of the underground and it's conscience lyrics. The mental stimulation I get from listening to Visionaries, K-os or Double Helix far surpasses anything I've ever heard from 50 Cent or Destiny's Child.

One life one tribe one love one blood
Too much has been shed its time to rise above
You don’t have to understand it and you dont have to like it
But were much more powerful when we're UNITED
Ignorance fight it Knowledge embrace it
Have sympathy for people who too scared to change shit
Dont talk it just live it
Enjoy life absorb every minute
Quit placing the blame
Put your mind towards change
Hold the torch, light the flame, make a difference
One love one nation lets get uplifted

i love this thread. mainly because i WAS one of those girls that went for that type of guy.. but i got into a lot of trouble for it.. almost went to jail, only didnt cuz my guy gave information to the cops so i was let off the hook. but it wasnt a good relationship. shyt was dangerous. we were goin nowhere in life. not to mention it was an abusive relationship..mentally im still recovering from it. i KNOW what u get when u hook up with a guy with all the money u want..(even tho its gotta do with drugs.) i know what its like to be wit the tough guy on the block. (i became friends with more then enough gang members.) u get so wrapped up in that life, u dont give a shyt bout what u do or do it too. n i lived that. ive done mad shyt i regret so much now, alotta shyt that i could be doin time for.....and i feel horrible for it. ive done so much wrong, n all i can do now is pray for forgiveness. Im so glad to be outa all that. my ex is locked up now. will be for a long time. that life style gets u no where. i fell for it all too, but now that ive lived it, id never go back.

I agree with you 100 percent poptart. I remember driving to the mall with my sis when this song came up on the radio. the first time i heard "soldier" i was thinkin, "oh they're supporting the soldiers in Iraq," haha how wrong i was. I kept listening and my sis and I were shocked.

Its amazing what music has come to now. Sometimes i feel like the worlds gone mad too.

Good read.
