desperate for help! - 09-19-2004, 01:47 PM

THE STORY SO FAR:
hooked up with a long lost friend, things took a turn for the romantic, and we're at the "introduce him/her to my friends" stage. in the years we've been out of touch he's built up a rep for himself in the club scene downtown (toronto) and "meeting his friends" really means "breaks in the main room at system soundbar". he showed me a bit of popping and locking (i think that's what its called?) and some other moves last night and they're pretty awesome. we're going this saturday.

THE PROBLEM:
i'm a full time university student who rarely ventures outside the library. i have never been to one of these type deals and i don't know what the hell i'm supposed to wear. asthetics are a big thing for him - he's spent thousands on his car and wardrobe - and i really really want to look not just presentable, but acceptable and - well - hot.

i'm caucasian (so is he) my hair is shoulder length, wavy dark blonde. i'm thin but curvy enough to wear just about anything, and i'm uber short (5'3").

WHAT I'M ASKING:
can someone PLEASE recommend some brands or stores (available in canada!) or styles? can i wear my nike sneakers? should i put my hair up or down, curled or straight, messy or looks like i've put time into it? maybe a hat? baseball cap? newsboy cap?
i can't dance at all (goes with the spending 3 years in the library)... mostly i'm just going to be watching and copying what other watchers are doing... can you give me any tips or warnings or things i should know?

i'm minorly freaking out and this is the best forum google found for me on the topic.

many thanks in advance!

EDIT/ DISCLAIMER:
i don't mean to be shallow. i recognize that there's a lot of style, time, effort, and heart that go into any subculture and someone asking for help posing won't recieve much love. if i find that i really like the scene i'll be back asking for help on moves and prowling for crews to watch, but in the mean time i'm just trying not to embarass my boo in front of his friends.

well just because you're a uni student... - 09-22-2004, 01:21 AM

doesn't mean you can't have fun!!!! You will regret it if you do. I spent my 2 first years as a book worm, and i massively regret, as i could have learned to break earlier that way! now that i'm a grad, i can't wait to go back and live the student life again at teacher's college.

chill out, i think you may be thinking about this a little too much, i have never seen any guy who thought about this stuff as much as we girls so. i take it you go to u of t or york??? i just went to the u of t hip hop club's battle....o of t won, and were great...I'M GLAD WE DIDN'T BATTLE THEM, however york beat us, but not by horrendous ammounts regarding they consist of the funk fanatics boys!!!

ummm, well i think just be yourself girl!!! i mean why would you want to be any other way, and who needs a boy who can;t accept that?

i've hung out at system before. i didn't know bboys hung out there? i guess i haven't been there in a while.

anyhow...if you really want to hit up some cool stores in the tdot...i like queen street...best shoe store in the world there, ever old school sneaker you can imagine ( i collect!) and spy lab rocks my world!!!!!

dont push me cuz i'm close to the edge, i'm tryin not to lose my head

thanks Tiny. my roommate is lending me these awesome adidas sneakers and i'm spending thursday on queen street looking for a hat or shirt or something.

i totally hear you on women stressing over appearances more than guys. if i was "being myself" i doubt i would be going to this event anyway. but i like freeland's music and am looking forward to seeing him spin live.

yeah, i'm at UofT. premed stuff. all work and no play makes Euo a dull girl, though, which is why i readly accepted the invite out.

thanks again. i'm a big fan of queen st w and kensington market styles, i'll check out that store you mentioned!

i'm glad tiny could help you out there- she knows the scene and the shops for sure !

remember- this guy... he likes you for who you are and he probably knows your wardrobe by now
if you just get a good pair of pants, or a shirt, it'll be fine ( especially if budget is an issue )

he'll appreciate that you made the effort, and you won't look like you went out and bought an entire breaker outfit just for the occasion

guys have minimal to no fashion sense anyhow
when i go out i'm usually in capoeria pants and a tank top - fuck the styles !

you must have been a bgirl.... because the only moves that you pulled on me were heartbreakers

umm i dunno if i can really lend any insight into the fashion part (electron's right...i always rep baggy jeans and a white, black, or graff-covered t-shirt...no fashion sense)...but i CAN tell you about the trying-to-impress part...

i once went out with this girl and she knew i wrote (did graff). suddenly she started trying to get into the culture, was buying shit i KNEW she was getting just to try to hold my interest (no, it wasn't the strongest of relationships haha)...that kinda thing...and to be honest, it was kinda embarassing...i didn't know how to respond to that kinda thing...so yea, my suggestion is to NOT go all out on a new wardrobe, maybe go out and get a dope top, or t-shirt or whatever...but don't drop a lot of money on a new outfit just for the night...it's kinda awkward when a girl does that (unless it's like a new dress for a dinner or something).

Think about it, you have writers learning the ins and outs of entire transport systems, risking serious injury even death, arrest and criminal records that would limit your opportunities for the rest of your life, for what? To simply paint a picture, does this seem logical to you? If the answer is no then it is most likely that you don’t fathom the idealism behind graffiti.
