New b-girl......Help me get started. Any tips? - 10-26-2003, 08:43 PM

I've been doing the push ups, research and everything inbetween. If you have any tips for a young learner please help a girl out. I really have the will and committment to break, I just need to get my footing.
Stay fly and gangsta! PEACE

Practice... Practice... Practice.... Practice..... one more of that Practice.

Thats all you need really and a couple of friends to cheer you on. I'm self-taught and I'm doing fine and I started out like a month ago.

first thing you want to learn is 6stepping... (which can be found in the moves section)

3step
2step...

Then maybe try your basic power moves like turtles or mills.

I started my mills first because I thought it would be easier to build your technique upon that.

Just ask around and use the moves section as a refrence... if ya want, you can get lessons from a professional.

Keep it real girl

don't give up either... or I'll call you a loser

Being the only 5'7(154) Korean guy in my town sux... it sure gets the girls tho...

I'm practicing 4hours everyday and I'm yet to see any difference yet...

Bass Guitar is my passion... but breakin' is what I am.

I guess that's an ok sig... ?

That's about all.....but if you feel confident in some of your strength, try some freezes/handstands. Nothin' too fancy to start, u need the strength first.

Peace.

no starting on mills eh....u boys don't realise it takes a while for girls to build up the upper body strength for those. work on forearm freezes and hanstand variations, to a one handed handstand. also variations of baby freeze.
peace

talent's right. only way you learn is practice. i recommend you either take lessons, or rent a video, cos it's easier to learn if you know how it's soppused to look like. and a very important thing: get a mirror. it helps. really.

Where you get your strength. - 12-03-2003, 08:40 PM

For all Breakers the most important muscle group to work on is your Abdominals. Second is your Lumbardian (the lower back).
But if you strengthin your abdominal muscles then you will notice a considerable improvement in the completion and quality of moves.
***Because it seams you are having difficulties, try moves that deal more with momentum then strength. You will get there, and the harder you work the better you will feel when it's all said and done. Hit me up and let me know how it turns out. Peace.

you'll build the strength you need to break by practicing your footwork , freezes and everything else. If you want extra conditioning, try a difficult yoga class or start practicing that on your own. Many of the asanas are simiilar to freezes and if you work the inversions daily , everything gets easier.

Practice holding crab , then practice turtles
and DRILL your footwork- get it clean , get it crisp, get it innate to your dancing so you no longer have to think about it - this takes time but it's SO worth it and will make a load of difference in your dancing level.

Footwork works your arms, your legs, your back - it's conditioning unto itself.

you must have been a bgirl.... because the only moves that you pulled on me were heartbreakers

Dont forget top rock and Uprock

Drifter...the final project

Breaking can be whatever you want it to be. If you want it
to be the original, structured dance that it was 20 years ago,
then it can be that for you. If you want it to be your own
limitless form of expression, it can be that for you.
The world will never agree on what exactly Breaking is...
and if the world ever does agree, then I guess I won't be Breaking anymore.

work on uprock and then learn to shuffle, all that is is rotating your legz around in a walking manner(one in front of the other) in a circle on the ground while facing forward and of course lifting the hands to slide your feet under. shuffling builds the foot speed and muscle memory all footwork is based on and is much easier mentally than 6-stepping, it may sound a little messed up in text but when you see it you'll be like OH. thats it. some people call shuffling 6-stepping 'cause they never seen a 6-step.
its ok dough

Learn Basics First - 01-02-2004, 03:34 PM

Start off with your basics first.... Like up rocks , baby freezes and footwork ( 6 step , 2 step ...)Depending on how fast you learn and stuff, then you should work on windmills for more strength and handstands for balance so you can start doin more upper body moves....Don't give up! I am tellin you now , you will have bruises on your hips, shoulders and knees and you will be sore... and please please STRETCH OUT before doin anything!!!! and remember practice doesn't make perfect , it makes your best. If you have someone teachin you , make sure they have patience

own style! - 01-03-2004, 05:50 AM

always remember your own style!
first do the top and uprocks, create your own style to break. (Not done in a second, takes time and hard work) Concentrate also on footwork (steps, russels...) combine them. Do also freezes (baby, chair, air...) and combine them. After knowing and handling the basic foundations, you should concentrate on powers. And you will also have more strenght to do powers.

Remember, it is different thing to do mills and headspins and know nothing more, than do your own style of toprock, uprock, footwork, freezes and combine them with powers. That is breaking!
